    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Workday & Hours: MON. - FRI. 6:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.**Subject to change
    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD seeks an Equipment Workerto join its Greenspace Management team. Must be willing to work the following schedule Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts. Also, applicant with grounds maintenance experience preferred.

    Equipment Worker ( Greenspace) will:
    • This individual will perform a variety of routine tasks related to ground maintenance operations.
    • May operate and maintain various pieces of equipment such as riding mowing units, lawn mowers, edger, chainsaw, and rototiller.
    • Perform work as team member, or individually as necessary to meet work requirements.
    • Assist with park maintenance quality inspections. Report problems and/or hazardous conditions to designated authority.
    • Perform work prepping special events, training, and other park activities.
    • May oversee probationers and temporary employees.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
    WORKING CONDITIONS
    The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns. Requires the ability to make fairly complex coordinated and sequenced motor movements in response to quickly changing external stimuli.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    May be required to have a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving based on the type of equipment the individual is assigned to operate.

    PREFERENCES

    Applicants that can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts and who have grounds maintenance experience are preferred.

    SELECTION / SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED
    The selection process will involve application review and/or Interview. The department may administer skills assessment test.

    SAFETY IMPACT POSITION - YES
    If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and if a promotional position, candidate must pass an assignment drug test.

    PAY GRADE - 13

    SALARY INFORMATION
    Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
