    Provides direct patient care in the Emergency Room under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and in accordance with established standards of practice. Maintains professional accountability for delivering high-quality patient care and collaborates with other departments to support coordinated, effective services. Upholds patient rights and ensures strict confidentiality of patient information. Performs all duties in alignment with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards.

    Position Details:

    Paramedic - IP - St. Louis Emergency Department Part time - 12 hours a week

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • High school diploma or GED required.

    Licensure:

    • Graduate of an EMT-P program and licensed in the state of practice.

    Experience:

    • New or experienced paramedics welcome.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Frequent standing and walking.
    • Significant bending, lifting, and patient movement.

    Certifications:

    (Preferred prior to hire but may be obtained during orientation)

    • Basic Life Support (AHA)
    • ACLS (may be required based on department)
    • PALS (may be required based on department)

    Safety & Risk Management:

    • Follows infection control practices and responds appropriately to crises.
    • Protects patient rights and supports fall and restraint safety.
    • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe environment; reports facility repair needs.
    • Ensures the department remains orderly and free of clutter.

    Coordination of Services:

    • Involves patients and families in care decisions and assists RNs with admissions/discharges.
    • Performs assessments as directed and provides safe patient handoffs (SBAR, bedside report, rounding).
    • Communicates changes in condition to the RN/provider promptly.
    • Supports care planning, documentation, and patient progress toward outcomes.
    • Maintains knowledge of scope of practice, completes required competencies, and participates in process improvement.
    • Reinforces patient/family education and completes assigned protocols.
    • Prioritizes care with the RN and delegates tasks to UAPs based on competency.

    Primary Clinical Responsibilities:

    • Administers IV push meds (including narcotics), verifies high-risk meds, and manages infusions.
    • Manages respiratory devices and provides care for intubated patients.
    • Performs reassessments, patient scales (RASS, CIWA), and EKG interpretation.
    • Completes procedures such as splinting, POC testing, and removal of sutures/staples/drains.

    Complex Clinical Responsibilities:

    • Manages hypothermia protocols and central lines (flushes, dressings, meds).
    • Monitors blood products, stops infusions for reactions, and acts as second verifier.
    • Uses ultrasound-guided and external jugular IV access; operates rapid infusers.
    • Provides lifespan care, transports critical patients, and applies/removes restraints.

    Communication Management:

    • Completes discharge documentation, removes IVs, and reinforces education.
    • Uses multi-line phone systems professionally.
    • Applies HEARTS service-recovery method.
    • Provides accurate updates to patients/families and communicates delays, next steps, and expectations.
