    Overview

    The Public Health Technician II role is responsible for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) surveillance, case reporting, public health follow-up and provider/patient education. The position exists to identify new STD cases within the jurisdiction, report new cases to Department of State Health Services (DSHS), contact trace for source and spread and to stop the spread of STDs via testing and treatment of patients and exposed persons. Tech II educates medical providers and patients on transmission, risk and testing and treatment guidelines.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct sexually transmitted disease (STD) surveillance by identifying newly diagnosed STD cases within the jurisdiction

    • Complete STD case reporting by submitting new cases to the Texas Department of State Health Services and preparing case reports for HIV and Congenital Syphilis investigations

    • Perform public health follow up by conducting contact tracing, interviewing patients, and documenting findings in the state database to prevent further transmission

    • Provide patient education focused on risk reduction, testing options, treatment guidance, and post treatment recommendations

    • Review monthly surveillance reports to ensure accuracy and completeness of required data elements for case reporting

    • Perform additional duties as assigned

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

    • Non-Exempt - Full-Time - Grant Funded

    • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

    • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS)

    • Six (6) months to one (1) year experience

    Licenses and Certifications

    Required

    • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

    Employment Testing

    Employment is contingent on passing any post-offer pre-employment screening as listed below:

    • Criminal Background Check: Yes

    • Motor Vehicle Record Check: Yes

    • Drug Screening: Yes

    • Physical Exam: Yes

    Basis of Rating

    A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
