Subject to change DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The City Controller’s Office is seeking a high-performing Associate Staff Analyst to serve as the Principal Assistant to the Deputy Director of Strategy, Planning, and Implementation, while also providing direct support to the Chief Administrative Officer.
This role operates at the center of executive leadership, supporting strategic planning, operational execution, and performance management across the Controller’s Office. The position is intentionally designed as a developmental and succession pipeline role, offering direct exposure to senior leadership decision-making, cross-functional initiatives, intergovernmental relations, policy development, performance management, and high-impact projects.
Working directly with the Deputy Director, this position will support the design and execution of high-impact strategic initiatives, while building the analytical, operational, and leadership competencies necessary to advance into senior-level roles within the City Controller’s Office.
This is a high-visibility, high-growth opportunity for a candidate with strong analytical capabilities, sound judgment, and the ability to translate data and strategy into actionable results.
The Associate Staff Analyst duties will include but are not limited to:- Provides direct analytical, operational, and administrative support to the Deputy Director of Strategy, Planning, and Implementation and the Chief Administrative Officer and Chief of Staff on strategic and organizational priorities.
- Assists in coordinating executive-level initiatives, ensuring alignment across leadership and divisions.
- Prepares briefing materials, presentations, and reports for senior leadership to support decision-making.
- Supports the prioritization and management of executive-level workflows, ensuring timely follow-up on key initiatives and action items.
- Handles highly sensitive and confidential matters with discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment.
- Assists in developing, tracking, and refining key performance indicators (KPIs) across divisions.
- Builds and maintains dashboards and reporting tools to monitor progress against strategic goals.
- Conducts in-depth data analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for operational improvement.
- Coordinates and tracks multiple strategic and operational projects simultaneously.
- Develops project timelines, monitors milestones, and ensures accountability for deliverables.
- Supports implementation of process improvements and evaluates outcomes post-implementation.
- Conducts research and benchmarking on policy, operational, and financial topics to support leadership decisions.
- Assists in drafting policies, procedures, and reports aimed at improving efficiency and effectiveness.
- Evaluates workflows and business processes, recommending enhancements based on data and best practices.
- Serves as a liaison between the Deputy Director and internal divisions, ensuring alignment and follow-through on strategic initiatives.
- Coordinates meetings, prepares agendas, and tracks action items to ensure execution discipline.
- Conducts research and analysis on policy, legislative, regulatory, and operational issues impacting the Controller’s Office and the City.
- Assists in the development, review, and refinement of policies, procedures, and administrative guidelines.
- Supports governmental and intergovernmental affairs efforts, including coordination and communication with City departments, City Council offices, and external stakeholders.
- Prepares briefing materials, policy summaries, and background information for leadership related to City Council matters, interagency initiatives, and external engagements.
- Tracks relevant policy developments and provides recommendations to support informed decision-making and strategic positioning.
- Engages with stakeholders across departments to support the implementation of cross-cutting initiatives.
- Manages competing priorities on behalf of the Deputy Director, ensuring efficient use of time and resources.
- Handles sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
- Supports special projects and assignments from the City Controller, Chief Administrative Officer, or Deputy Director.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. but may periodically be subject to outdoor conditions.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Communications, Journalism, Economics, or a closely related field to the type of work being performed.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS No experience required.

- Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.
