Position DescriptionEmployees in this classification provide patient care management to an assigned clinic in the areas of clerical and clinical duties. In the clinical setting, the employee receives direct supervision from a physician or nursing supervisor in either oral or written form. In the office setting, the employee receives direct supervision from the department administrator. Work is performed under usual office and clinic conditions, and may be stressful when working under emergency conditions.
Major/Essential FunctionsThe Clinical Assistant supports dermatology providers in delivering efficient, high-quality patient care in a fast-paced ambulatory setting. This role is responsible for patient intake, clinical documentation, procedural assistance, and clinic flow management. The CA ensures accuracy, compliance, and a high standard of patient experience while maintaining provider efficiency and schedule integrity.
Patient Intake & Clinical Preparation- Perform comprehensive patient intake, including chief complaint, history of present illness, medication reconciliation, allergies, and dermatologic history
- Prepare patients for examination, including appropriate gowning and positioning
- Capture and upload clinical images per protocol
- Document all patient information accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) in real time
Provider Support & Procedural Assistance- Assist providers with dermatologic procedures, including biopsies, excisions, cryotherapy, and electrodessication & curettage
- Prepare and maintain exam/procedure rooms with appropriate instruments and supplies
- Anticipate provider needs to ensure efficient workflow and minimal delays
- Apply dressings and provide post-procedure care instructions
Specimen Handling & Lab Coordination- Accurately label and process pathology specimens
- Complete lab requisitions with detailed and correct clinical information
- Coordinate specimen handling and tracking with pathology laboratories
Medication & Treatment Support- Prepare and administer medications within the scope of practice and clinic protocols
- Verify medication accuracy, dosage, and expiration
- Educate patients on medication use and post-treatment care
Documentation & Compliance- Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation in the EHR
- Ensure documentation supports medical decision-making and billing requirements
- Adhere to clinic policies, regulatory standards, and scope-of-practice guidelines
Clinic Flow & Operations- Room patients efficiently and support provider schedule adherence
- Turn over exam rooms quickly while maintaining cleanliness and readiness
- Monitor clinic flow and communicate delays or issues proactively
- Support same-day appointments and urgent patient needs
Patient Experience- Provide clear, professional communication and instructions to patients
- Address patient questions within scope and escalate concerns appropriately
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold HIPAA standards
Inventory & Equipment Management- Maintain an adequate stock of clinical supplies and procedure materials
- Ensure equipment is functional and report issues promptly
- Support overall clinic readiness and operational efficiency
Infection Control & Safety- Follow all infection prevention and control protocols
- Properly dispose of sharps and biohazard materials
- Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment
Required QualificationsA minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an approved certified program for assistants in the area of required specialty. Certification by an approved accredited certifying agency in the specialty in which the particular work will be performed.
