    Definition and Class Characteristics

INTERVIEWS FOR SELECTED CANDIDATES WILL BE HELD THE WEEK OF MAY 26th

Nevada County is seeking a detail-oriented and analytically strong professional to join the Assessor’s Office as an Assessment Assistant I. This position offers a structured career opportunity for individuals interested in developing specialized expertise in property assessment, public records analysis, and the application of state property tax laws and procedures. This position is based in the office and follows standard County business hours.

This is a highly detail-sensitive role that requires the ability to interpret legal and property-related documents, analyze information for accuracy and consistency, and apply established regulations to real-world property transactions. The work performed directly supports the integrity of the County’s assessment roll and the equitable administration of property taxation.

Successful candidates will bring strong critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to professional customer service. They can navigate complex, highly regulated information with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. This role is ideal for individuals seeking meaningful, analytical work within a public service environment.

Under general supervision, incumbents perform technical and clerical duties related to the maintenance of property assessment records, including changes in ownership, exemption processing, and support of the assessment roll. The role requires frequent interpretation of deeds, legal documents, and parcel information, as well as regular interaction with the public to provide accurate and professional assistance regarding property ownership records.

Essential Duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Responding to inquiries from the public regarding property ownership and assessment records
    • Reviewing, analyzing, and processing deeds and property ownership documents
    • Maintaining and updating assessment roll records with a high degree of accuracy
    • Processing exemption and exclusion claims in accordance with applicable regulations
    • Interpreting Assessor’s parcel maps and related property data
    • Performing data entry, record validation, and report generation

Career Progression: The Assessment Assistant series is distinguished from the Office Assistant series in that the former performs specialized clerical work involved in the preparation of the assessment rolls requiring knowledge of the Revenue and Taxation Code and Assessor's Handbook.

Assessment Assistant I is the entry-level classification, designed for individuals developing technical knowledge of property assessment systems and procedures. Incumbents learn applicable codes, workflows, and documentation standards while progressively increasing independence.

This is a flexibly staffed series with a defined advancement pathway. Progression from Assessment Assistant I to Assessment Assistant II is based on demonstrated proficiency, applied knowledge, and successful performance in increasingly complex assignments.

Why This Role: This position offers the opportunity to develop specialized expertise in property assessment within a structured public-sector environment where accuracy, analysis, and consistency are critical to public trust. Nevada County supports professional development, skill advancement, and long-term career growth within the organization.
