    The Job

    The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is currently accepting applications for Sheriff's Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner I*. Incumbents provide patient care services in adult correctional facilities, integrating behavioral health through a collaborative care model. Responsibilities include obtaining patient health histories; identifying abnormal conditions and developing treatment plans; and documenting findings, assessments, treatment plans, follow-up care, and ongoing evaluations. The role also involves providing ongoing mental health evaluations and delivering appropriate interventions for the incarcerated population, in collaboration with a clinical therapist and psychiatrist.

    The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is establishing an internal Behavioral Health Services Program within its adult correctional facilities to maintain ongoing responsibility for mental health and healthcare services. This transition will support continuity of care for the incarcerated population through integrated services and early intervention, using an ongoing collaborative, multidisciplinary approach focused on improved health outcomes.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must pass a credit check and medical exam, which may include drug and/or TB testing. Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent U.S. resident.

    Background:
    Candidates must not have been convicted of a felony and must successfully pass an extensive background investigation which includes a fingerprint check and polygraph examination.

    Travel: Travel throughout the County will be required. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation. The incumbent must be willing and able to travel between Sheriff's detention facilities as needed.

    Sponsorship: Please note San Bernardino County is not able to consider candidates who will require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

    Licensure /Certification: All required licensure (CA NP and CA RN) and certifications (BLS and DEA Authorization/Registration) must be obtained prior to employment start/hire date, and must be maintained through the duration of employment as a Nurse Practitioner I or Nurse Practitioner II.

    Promotion: Nurse Practitioners I serve in a trainee capacity and are eligible for promotion to Nurse Practitioner II upon demonstrating proficiency in a specified area of training and certification and upon receipt of a satisfactory work progress report. Incumbents must promote to Nurse Practitioner II ( $128,086.40 - $168,084.80 annual salary) within twelve (12) months or be terminated.

    Minimum Requirements

    Applicants must meet ALL of the requirements below :

    Licensure:
    • NP & RN License: Must possess and maintain a current Nurse Practitioner license and a current Registered Nurse license. Both must be in good standing and have been issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing
    • Furnishing Number: Must possess and maintain a current furnishing number issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Indicate furnishing number in the Licenses and Certificates section of the application

    Certification:
    • National Certification: Must possess and maintain certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner issued by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). A copy of the PMHNP certificate must be submitted with the application
    • BLS Certification: Must possess and maintain a Healthcare Provider level Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate (Course Completion Card) issued by the American Heart Association or the Red Cross.
    • DEA Certification: Must possess and maintain a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate.


    Desired Qualifications

    Applicants who possess nursing experience working wi th incarcerated populations, particularly in an adult correctional facility, are strongly encouraged to apply.

    Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and/or Vietnamese are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional compensation is associated with positions requiring the use of bilingual skills. Testing of bilingual skills may be required to receive additional compensation.
