    San Mateo County Transit District Employer:

    SMCTD - SAN MATEO COUNTY TRANSIT DISTRICT

    The San Mateo County Transit District is the administrative body for the principal public transit and transportation programs in San Mateo County: SamTrans bus service, including Redi-Wheels paratransit service, Caltrain commuter rail and the San Mateo County Transportation Authority. Caltrain and the TA have contracted with the District to serve as their managing agency, under the direction of their boards of directors.

    Job Description

    General

    The High Voltage Electrician will report to the Assistant Manager, Facilities, and is responsible for a variety of medium and high voltage (above 600 volts power) electrical distribution systems and associated electrical equipment. The functions/duties are comprehensive of skilled work involving installation, maintenance, inspection, service, repair, modification, troubleshooting, monitoring and operation of such systems/equipment.

    This position is journey-level in nature to provide skilled electrical services while ensuring a high degree of compliance to applicable regulatory/safety codes, District policies and best practices of the trade.

    Essential Functions & Duties

    • Monitors, inspects and tests high voltage electrical distribution systems and related power equipment and documents findings.
    • Troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and installs high voltage electrical components, circuits and systems and supporting hardware.
    • Monitors and operates various power components to clear sections of the system for maintenance, installation and load shedding.
    • Coordinates, plans and monitors scheduled work with staff/stakeholders, other crafts, third-party contractors and/or inspection/regulatory agencies.
    • Responds to emergency calls to take necessary actions and interim measures.

    Examples of Essential Duties:
    • Operates, tests, inspects, repairs and/or replaces electrical components and hardware.
    • Provides support for capital projects to plan, review, construct, test, inspect and commission finished work.
    • Uses a variety of testing, calibration and repair tools and devices to inspect switchgear and power distribution equipment to OEM standards.
    • Prepares a variety of basic work records, service orders, inspection reports, and maintenance logs.
    • Perform general electrical work and maintenance services on District buildings/facilities.
    • Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect oneself, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures in an effort to reduce or eliminate accidents.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient experience, training and/or education to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. In lieu of a degree, work-related experience that demonstrates the skills and experience necessary to perform this role will be accepted. Development of the required knowledge and abilities is typically obtained through but not limited to:
    • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
    • Certificate of completion of a recognized apprenticeship, accredited trade school, or the equivalent amount of experience and training comparable to journey level crafts status as a High Voltage Electrician.
    • Eight (8) years of experience working at a journeyman level as an electrician in commercial, industrial or institutional environments.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Ability to read and interpret blueprints with thorough knowledge of the NEC and the California Electric Code.
    • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
    • Understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
    • CA General Electrician Certification.
    • Ability to work on-call potentially evenings and weekends, including Holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions when necessary.
    • Ability to possess a valid CA driver license, good driving record preferred.

    • Paid Holidays - The District provides seven paid holidays throughout the year - New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day (July 4th), Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day
    • Floating Holidays - District employees can earn up to five (5) floating holidays.

    • Pension Benefits through CalPERS -You must have a minimum of 5 years of service to be eligible for this pension.
    • CalPERS PEPRA vs. Classic - All employees hired on, or after January 1, 2013, are considered PEPRA members and will contribute 8% of their salary up to the maximum IRS cut-off. All Classic members will contribute 6%
    • Deferred Compensation Options - Select to contribute to one or both of our Tax Deferred Compensation Options
