    Job Description

    The Position

    Why Join the Contra Costa County Assessor’s Office?
    The Contra Costa County Assessor’s Office discovers and assesses all property within the County. We also produce and deliver an assessment roll by July 1 of each year, value all real property, audit all entities doing business in the County and value all taxable personal property, establish and maintain a set of 12,000 maps for assessment purposes, delineating every parcel of land in the County, and provides a public information service to assist taxpayers with questions about property ownership and assessment.

    Looking to jumpstart your career in the appraisal field? The Assessor's Office is currently seeking six ambitious individuals to fill the role of Junior Appraiser. This entry-level position offers extensive classroom and on-the-job training, providing you with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this exciting field.

    As a Junior Appraiser, you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of assignments throughout the County. These tasks may include inspecting both real and personal property, estimating costs and charges affecting value, and evaluating new construction and remodeling work.     Minimum Qualifications

    License Required : Candidates must possess and maintain throughout the duration of employment a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

    Certification Required: Appointees must meet certification requirements established by the California State Board of Equalization within one year of employment.

    Education: Possession of a Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university.

    Substitution Options: (1) Full-time professional experience appraising real property in a California County Assessor's Office, or in a state or federal agency in California responsible for appraising property, may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years. (2) Experience in the class equivalent to Real Property Technical Assistant in Contra Costa County may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years. (3) Current professional membership (MAI designation), or the SRA (Senior Residential Appraiser), or SRPA (Senior Real Property Appraiser) or SREA (Senior Real Estate Analyst) designation issued by the Appraisal Institute, or SRWA (Senior Right-of-Way Agent Designation) with the International Right-of-Way Association may be substituted for the Bachelor degree.

    Selection Process

    Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application; applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
    Online Multiple-Choice Assessment: Candidates who clearly demonstrate that they possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a multiple-choice assessment online. The assessment is designed to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include but are not limited to Analyzing & Interpreting Data, Critical Thinking; Decision Making, Reading Comprehension, Adaptability, Attention to Detail, Professional Integrity & Ethics, Self-Management, Oral Communication, Customer Focus, Professional Impact, and Teamwork. (Weighted 50%)
    Remote Oral Interview: Candidates who achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the multiple-choice assessment will be invited to participate in an oral interview. The oral interview will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. In the oral interview, candidates must achieve an overall passing score of 70% or higher. (Weighted 50%)

    The Online Multiple-Choice Exam is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) on 9/16/2025 through 9/22/2025

    The Remote Oral Interview is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) on 9/25/2025 through 9/30/2025

    The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

    CONVICTION HISTORY

    DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

    All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
