    Job Description

    The Position

    Bargaining Unit: Local 21 - Supervisory Management

    The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is offering an excellent employment opportunity to fill a vacant Supervising Civil Engineer position, located in Martinez, CA. Under general direction, Supervising Civil Engineers are responsible for an engineering division of the Public Works Department; planning, directing, coordinating and reviewing the work of the professional and subprofessional engineering personnel and performing related work as required.

    Supervising Civil Engineers have status as division managers in the Public Works Department. Administrative and supervisory ability, as well as thorough understanding of the technical aspects of engineering, are required, since incumbents of the class are directly responsible for the operation of one of several engineering divisions.

    The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management. CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.
    Public Works is responsible for providing programs and services that directly benefit the citizens of Contra Costa County. As a Division Manager in one of the engineering divisions, you oversee and guide a diverse staff to fulfill the goals of your assigned division while delivering excellent customer service.

    Minimum Qualifications

    License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

    Registration Required: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the State of California, Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

    Experience: Five (5) years of full-time, or its equivalent, professional experience in civil engineering, three (3) years of which must have been as a supervisor.

    Selection Process

A completed Supplemental Questionnaire is required at the time of applying.Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.Online Interview Assessment: The interview Assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. In the Interview Assessment, candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the competencies, as well as an overall passing score of 70% or higher. These may include but are not limited to: Action and Results Focused (Taking Initiative), Strategic Thinking and Perspective, Interpersonal Savvy, Thinking and Acting Systematically, Leading Cross-Divisional Collaboration, and Professional Integrity and Ethics. (Weighted 100%)
    The online Interview assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place online July, 2025.
