    Job Description

    The Victim Services Advocate (SO) provides crisis intervention and comfort to victims and witnesses of crime and trauma for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO). Assists victims while being interviewed by deputies and investigators. Refers victims and witnesses to supportive agency programs. Serves as liaison between agencies and follow-up assistance to address victims' needs. Notifies crime victims of their rights under state laws. Assists victims with applications for compensation. Assists victims before and during court. Assumes on-call status to provide services 24-7. Provides training and support to community volunteers performing crisis intervention duties after hours.

    Description:

    Starting Pay: $27.21 Per Hour

    Top Out Pay After Years of Service: $40.82

    • Provides intervention and counseling to victims and witnesses in crisis situations reported to theJCSO immediately on scene and during follow-up. Provides emotional support and assists victims while being interviewed by deputies and investigators.
    • Maintains a caseload of victims and cases. Provides follow-up support to victims by phone, appointment and email. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with victims, witnesses and their families to provide crisis intervention support, resources and referrals. Refers victims and witnesses to supportive agencies such as social services, mental health services, and medical services, as appropriate. Advocates for victims' and witnesses' rights/needs. Provides follow-up assistance to ensure victims' and witnesses' needs are addressed, including safety and individual and family support. Contacts crime victims and witnesses whose circumstances comply with state and federal law and guidelines for victims' advocacy. Notify them of their rights under state law and explain the services of the unit. Facilitates financial compensation to victims. Assist victims with applications and prepare documentation for the victim compensation process.
    • Uses computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, database, spreadsheet and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information. Prepares a variety of correspondence for victims according to circumstances. Summarizes data in preparation of statistical reports.
    • Represents the unit at countywide meetings. Serves as a member of various committees and professional organizations. Attends meetings and provides input based on expertise and observations.
    • Provides public education on victim rights. Attends department sponsored events and provides educational material on victim rights and issues surrounding the impact of trauma. Recruits volunteers through these events.
    • Answers telephone inquiries. Provides information based on extensive knowledge of victim programs andactivities orrefer callers to appropriate personnel or services.
    • Works in partnership with outside and surrounding agencies to maintain best practices for the victim services unit and prevent overlap of duties.
    • Participates in trainings for JCSO personnel regarding information on crime victims’ rights, victim compensation, and working with victims. Maintains and updates manuals for volunteer training program. Makes training materials available, as necessary.Plans, prepares, and provides training during to volunteer advocates. Trains and supervises community volunteers to assist staff in program provision
    • Participates in Emergency Operations Center during large scale events such as wildfires.
    • Other duties as assigned.
