The Chief of Budget plays a crucial role in shaping the County’s financial strategy, bringing creativity to revenue planning, and ensuring sustainable long-term debt management. This position involves working closely with partner entities and constitutional officers, serving as an expert and a voice of reason in negotiations and strategic discussions. Reporting to the Assistant Chief Financial Officer, the Chief of Budget oversees the Office of Management and Budget in the Department of Finance and Budget. The total budget of the Department of Finance and Budget is $9.8M, of which $655,000 is the Office of Management and Budget.
This position requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, public administration, political science, or related field, with substantial concentration in finance and budget; and progressively responsible work experience in budgeting, strategic planning and management, business process analysis, organizational development, or quality improvement management and training, preferably in a local government setting. Master’s degree preferred.
The starting salary for this position will be $112,163 - $123,969 and a $5,000 sign-on bonus. Albemarle County offers excellent benefits, including annual (front loaded) and sick leave, health insurance options (health, vision, and dental), and Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits. The County provides cell phone stipends as agreed upon to conduct day-to-day business. This is a full-time FLSA Exempt position. County-paid life insurance and deferred compensation are available. Residency within Virginia is required. A candidate relocating from outside Albemarle County may receive relocation assistance up to $7,000. This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work schedule that is in compliance with the County’s Remote Work Policy and meets the operational and service needs of the position.
