As the home department to SSU’s Multiple Subject Teaching Credential Program, we immerse teacher candidates in theory, research, and pedagogical practices across content areas and grade levels in the elementary school setting (TK through Grade 6). JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, this position monitors the use of the swimming pool and enforces safety rules. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: An incumbent in this classification patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility to ensure safe and enjoyable program activities; and completes required department paperwork. Work is closely supervised and reviewed through regularly scheduled conferences, reports and evaluations. Year Round: This is a part-time position, working throughout the year. Work schedules vary as needed. As a condition of employment, a lifeguard must be available for all in-service training, annual training dates and annual fitness performance test. Seasonal: This is a seasonal part-time position, working during the school year (September to May) or the Summer (June to August). Work schedules vary as needed. As a condition of seasonal employment, a Lifeguard must be available for all in-service training, and during the entire seasoned worked. Incumbents will be required to attend : 1. Orientation/training - Typically held Monday - Friday, from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m., scheduled after hire date. Times and dates subject to change. 2. Pre-Summer Orientation/Training: TBD. Applicants age 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. TESTING CRITERIA: In-Water Physical Fitness Test : Tread water for 120 seconds using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands above water; 25 yard dive and approach swim (head up) in 18 seconds or less; Complete a timed event within 90 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound swim brick. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 200 yard swim in 3 minutes and 30 seconds or less Applicants who complete the In-Water Physical Fitness Test will be invited to participate in the selection interviews. Interviews will begin after all the fitness testing is complete. Required Certifications: Applicants must provide proof of valid original certifications prior to the first day of employment. Recognizes, enters water, and performs aquatic emergency rescues in the pool area; and administers artificial respiration, CPR/AED and first aid as needed. Prepares facilities for regular operation of lap swim, lessons, and other daily operations. Removes and replaces pool covers and lane lines. Assists with routine pool cleaning and maintenance work on or around the swimming pool. Assists in the monitoring of pool chemicals. Assists with desk reception, telephone support and related customer service activities. Accepts registration, collects fees, processes receipts, and accounts for money; acts as cashier as needed. Performs other duties as required. Qualification Guidelines (THIS SECTION IS CURRENLTY UNDER REVIEW) A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this classification is as follows: Education, Training and/or Experience: Training, education, and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities as listed below. Previous paid or volunteer experience as a pool or beach lifeguard is desirable. Experience working with children and youth is desirable. Must be at least 16 years of age or older. A work permit may be required for current high school students. License and/or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver License may be required for certain positions. Revocation of license during employment may result in disciplinary action or reassignment. A current (less than two years) tuberculosis clearance certificate by date of hire. Candidate must submit proof of valid American Red Cross (or other state recognized) certificates in the following: Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED for Lifeguards, and First-Aid; or must show proof of enrollment in courses to obtain required certifications. The purpose of an Embedded Tutor is to provide additional support to students within and beyond the classroom. They work closely with the course's instructor to help facilitate class activities, develop and lead workshops, conduct group review sessions, tutor students individually, and act as a model student. Representative Duties and Responsibilities: The Embedded Tutor attends weekly class meetings for their assigned course section(s)and serves the students as: 1) a co-facilitator - collaborating with the instructor to strengthen student success, recognize affective issues, and help build a community within the classroom. 2) a tutor - helping students understand content, improve their English language skills, and become better readers, writers, and critical thinkers. 3) a model academic- exhibiting academic skills that students can emulate, such as completing reading assignments and engaging in classroom discussion. Embedded Tutors: -Meet with students and provide individualized attention and support outside of the classroom. -Host language, reading and writing workshops for students. -Aid in providing learning strategies and study skills to support students in becoming independent learners. -Introduce students to the benefits of tutoring who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. -Are required to attend an initial training and monthly meetings, with follow-up trainings throughout the year. -Complete other duties/responsibilities as assigned. Education and Experience Guidelines: Education/Training: Minimum Qualifications (applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria): Be currently enrolled as a graduate student or hold a Master's degree in a discipline related to the position (e.g. TESOL, Education, Linguistics, English). Have completed coursework that centers around TESOL, Education, Linguistics and/or English. Be equity-minded and have experience working in environments with people of diverse backgrounds.
