Minimum Qualifications Four years of full-time experience* as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for the diagnosis of faulty vehicle and/or equipment operation and the performance of mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive or diesel repair technology OR an associate’s degree in automotive or diesel repair technology. Substitution: Education as detailed below may be substituted for a maximum of two years of experience: Graduation from a technical or vocational program, such as B.O.C.E.S, in automotive or diesel technoloty or automotive or diesel repair technoloty may be substituted for one year of experience. Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Park Maintenance Supervisor or designee, the incumbent will be assigned to the Regional Maintenance Garage. The incumbent will be required to perform a wide range of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks. Duties include, but are not limited to: • Performs tasks in the repair, maintenance, and servicing of automotive and mechanical equipment such as service and adjustment of brakes, replacement of wheel bearings, and the removal and replacement of such components as starters, fuel pumps, water pumps, gas tanks, exhaust system components, shock absorbers, springs, and radiators. • Performs engine repairs as well as tune-ups according to manufacturer’s specifications. • Performs preventive maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment following preventive maintenance schedules to insure safe and trouble-free performance. • Execute minor and major mechanical repairs by performing such tasks as disassembling and assembling engine components or mechanical equipment, cleaning parts and inspecting them for wear, and performing activities such as grinding valves and valve seats according to specifications and specific instructions. • Operate departmental equipment including light duty trucks, commercial vehicles, and heavy equipment. • May perform welding using electric or oxy-acetylene welding equipment not requiring complex planning and layout or the use of special procedures.
