Department Summary The Humanities Department at SJSU is a prominent center for creative, interdisciplinary study and research. In addition, you will hold regular office hours for students, work cooperatively with other department faculty, staff, and department chair, as well as participate in required course grading and assessment activities, etc. “Chronicles of Education” uses narratives of education to teach about the forces that shape individuals and societies. The course features histories and narratives of education that represent global, multi-linguistic, gendered and multi-cultural perspectives about educational practice and philosophy. The study of poetry, fiction, creative non-fiction, and educational autobiography, as well as visual art and documentary film, expand traditional views about the sites where education takes place. Topics covered include the history of US education; philosophy of education; global influences on US educational practice; education as colonization; language and the role of embodiment in learning; and education for social resistance. Fieldwork Courses: Each course in this fieldwork series requires that student volunteer in public-school classrooms with credentialed teachers. The courses include topics such as funds of knowledge, culturally responsive pedagogy, the physical and procedural classroom, home-school partnerships, and so on. The courses are designed to meet the fieldwork requirement to enter a credential program. It is strongly preferred that instructors of these courses have experience as the teacher of record in a multiple subject classroom. Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a student population of great diversity-including age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation-through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. A General Note about Our Curriculum: In all of our programs, we seek to understand the profound questions about what it means to be human, while contextualizing those questions in time, place, and culture, as well as within institutions of education. We explore questions about conflict, injustice, inequality, as well as questions of beauty and meaning and creative expression. We push the boundaries of humanistic studies into environmental humanities and digital humanities. Liberal Studies Teacher Preparation majors base their training to become teachers of K-8 grade students upon a foundation in critical humanistic study. Department Summary The Humanities Department at SJSU is a prominent center for creative, critical, interdisciplinary study and research. Brief Description of Global Humanities Lecturer Duties Teach a range of courses in the Humanities, including our core skills courses (e.g., HUM100W and HUM190), global humanities course (e.g., HUM128), and possibly our Humanities Honors courses. Department Summary The Humanities Department at SJSU is a prominent center for creative, interdisciplinary study and research. Brief Description of Duties Teach a range of courses in the Creative Arts Program in the Humanities Department, including lower- and upper-division courses. In addition, you will hold regular office hours for students, work cooperatively with other department faculty, staff, and department chair, as well as participate in required course grading and assessment activities, etc. “Creativity Matters” (CA60) Study why creativity matters, from imagining possible career paths to improving communication, expressing ideas, and flourishing over the course of one’s lifetime. It is a human faculty that matters for life. “Introduction to Queer Arts” (CA95) Exploration of the ways that LGBTQ individuals and groups have used the arts, in various times and places, to make their lives, communities, and selves meaningful and to resist the domination of non-queer cultures. “The Arts in U.S. Society” (CA172) Study of American arts and artists in their aesthetic, social, and political contexts, focusing on 20th and 21st centuries. Arts examined may include architecture, poetry, music, visual arts, dance, theatre, performance art, and fiction. Special emphasis on issues of cultural diversity and social justice. “Thinking about Contemporary World Arts” (CA173) An interdisciplinary investigation of the connections between the contemporary arts and global cultures. Use of critical and creative thinking to develop global understanding and to explore personal and cultural identities. “Creativity & Creative Leadership” (CA176) Relationships among creativity, the arts, and leadership. Contemporary theories of creativity applied to the study of leadership within education, the arts, and social change through exploration of research, role models, and case studies. Application of relevant theories of creativity and leadership through collaborative projects, participant observation, or critical analysis of theories in practice.
