ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Group Fitness Instructors duties include but are not limited to the following: Responsible for planning and instructing group fitness programs in one or more assigned fitness areas. Motivate individuals or groups in exercise activities Work with people of all ages and skill levels Provide a safe and fun environment for participants Ensure the exercise space is clean and free of health and safety hazards Instructs participants on effective workout methods, explains proper techniques, demonstrates exercises Good communication skills; ability to explain things clearly Must be reliable and dependable Maintains good public relations and keeps supervisors informed of customer and facility needs Maintains records of participation and completes required reports At all times, demonstrates cooperative behavior with colleagues, supervisors and the public Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. While performing the duties of the job, the instructor occasionally works with various types of fitness equipment. The noise level during class can be loud due to up tempo music and choreography. Instructors may be assigned an irregular working schedule including weekends, early mornings and evenings and may have to travel between various locations. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position. Methods and principles in instructing individuals or groups of children, teens, or adults. Principles and techniques of first aid and CPR respiration. Principles and practices of safety management. Ability to : On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; stand, bend, stoop, kneel as necessary to instruct a high intensity physical fitness class. Intermittently interpret policies and procedures, and explain operations and problem solve issues for the public and with staff; lift or carry weight of 45 pounds or less. Lead and motivate large group classes. Respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR, if certified. Experience and Training Experience : Six months of experience as an instructor in group exercise or personal training, preferred. AND Training : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or higher level degree. License or Certificate Possession of CPR and First Aid certificates within six months of hire. Possession of a national certification from an accredited fitness association such as ACE, AFAA, or AEA in group exercise or personal training within six months of hire. Or a Bachelor’s degree with emphasis in exercise-related studies. Essential Job Functions Plans and conducts swimming lessons and water safety presentations according to skill requirements as defined by the American Red Cross Learn to Swim and Water Safety Instructor Program. Establishes positive public relations with parents/guardians of program participants helping them recognize and understand swimming developments and achievements. Cautions program participants and other swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards. Acts immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of program participants and other swimmers in the event of an emergency. Performs first aid or CPR when needed. Observes, enforces, and educates on preventative water safety measures and the rules and regulations of the facility. Ensures the timely completion of records and other required documentation to the program coordinator. Assists with maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary facility. Maintains appropriate fitness level to perform all essential functions of the position. Continually practices safe work habits and alerts management about safety and other workplace concerns. Reports for duty at the times specified and ensures a high standard of personal presentation and appearance is maintained per policy. Attends mandatory training, orientations, and other staff meetings as scheduled. Adheres to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the City of Bryan and the Parks and Recreation Department. Performs other duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Required: Must be at least 16 years of age. Preferred: Previous experience teaching swimming lessons or participating in competitive swimming. Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements Preferred: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor ( WSI ) Certification or equivalent.
