    Definition

    The City of Milpitas City Manager's Office is looking for a Communications Student Intern to support Citywide marketing, graphic design, and multimedia storytelling efforts. This internship offers hands-on experience working on real projects that promote City programs, initiatives, and events while collaborating with multiple City departments. Student Interns perform a variety of administrative tasks including conducting research, conduct survey work, perform special project work that could include analytical assessment, assist in the coordination of citywide activities as well as organize, produce, and staff various events.

    The ideal candidate is a motivated and creative student currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program related to Graphic Design, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a similar field. They have a strong visual eye, basic experience with design and multimedia tools, and an interest in public sector communications. This candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and excited to collaborate with a professional communications team while building real-world experience.

    What You'll Do :
    The Intern will perform a wide variety of responsible administrative and project related work, assisting City staff with general technical and clerical tasks in the field of assignment, internet research, survey work, creating reports in various software applications, data entry and assist with internal and external communication and public outreach.

    Employment Information:
    • Hourly Pay Range: $18.20 - $30.00
      • Hourly pay will be determined by relevant education and experience.
    • Work Hours: Up to 29 hours per week, and no more than 999 hours worked in a fiscal year (July-June)
    • Schedule: Part-time; may be flexible during regular business hours (Mon-Fri 8AM-5PM)
      • Work will be primarily on-site at Milpitas City Hall;
      • Occasional remote work may be available depending on project needs.
    • Employment Status: Unbenefited and unrepresented.
    • Internship Duration:
      • Start Date: ASAP; February 2026
      • End Date: June 2026 (Flexible based on academic schedule)
    Examples of Job Duties / Projects:
    • Design and produce print and digital materials such as flyers, brochures, infographics, and reports
    • Create custom graphics and content for the City website and social media platforms
    • Assist with video production, editing, and basic videography projects
    • Support photography needs for newsletters, publications, and promotional campaigns
    • Collaborate with City departments to ensure messaging is accurate, on-brand, and visually engaging
    • Provide general communications and marketing support for City initiatives and events


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Age Requirement: Must be at least eighteen (18) years old at the time of application.

    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
      • Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or vocational degree/certification program from an accredited college or university.
      • Verification of education will be required prior to being hired for this position.
    • Experience: No work experience is required.
    • Driver's License: This position may need to travel to different locations in Milpitas.
      • Possession of a valid State of California Driver's License is preferred, but not required.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • College level coursework in Graphic Design, Web Design, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.

    Highly Desirable Skills:
    • Proficiency with Canva and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator)
    • Experience with video production and editing (Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro)
    • Ability to create visually engaging PowerPoint presentations
    • Photography skills for newsletters, brochures, and promotional materials
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including proofreading
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines


    Interviews for this position are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 2, 2026 via Zoom.

    Selection Process:
    The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's training and experience based on the application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews.
