    Recreation Leader I/II
    The City of Foster City is searching for talented, energetic, responsible individuals who are serious about having fun! If you can think on your feet and be a fun team player, this could be the position for you! As a Recreation Leader, you’ll be responsible for implementing quality youth and teen programs and providing a safe environment for our participants. This is a part-time, seasonal, non-benefited position limited to approximately 20 hours per week and 980 hours in a fiscal year. Level of position will be determined based on the experience (see Education and Training Guidelines).

    Summer Camps
    Candidates must commit to working for the entire Summer (June 15, 2026 -August 8, 2026). There will also be a mandatory training for all new and returning staff on June 8, 2026 through June 12, 2026. Work hours will vary between 7:45am – 6:00pm depending on the camp, Monday through Friday. No weekends shifts are available.

    Summer Camps: Kamp Koala, Camp Outback, Camp Way Outback, Camp Breakaway.

    The Vibe Teen Center
    We are looking for Recreation Leaders to assist with supervision, lead recreational activities, supervise rentals, and plan special events for teens. This position will start in June and Recreation Leaders must be able to work on a Friday or work a weekend shift each week. Work hours will vary, but typically will be from:

    School Year Schedule : Positions are limited.
    • Monday - Thursday 3:00pm-6:00pm
    • Fridays 3:00pm-9:00pm
    • Some weekend shifts are available.

    Summer Schedule :
    • Monday-Thursday: 3:00pm-6:00pm
    • Fridays: 3:00pm-8:00pm
    • Some weekend shifts are available.

    Salary
    • Recreation Leader I: $17.85 - $20.48
    • Recreation Leader II: $19.12 - $21.96

    Important and Essential Responsibilities
    • Must be at least 15 years of age to work at Summer Camps and 16 years of age to work at The Vibe.
    • Supervise youth and teens in city programming, which may include after school programs, teen center, vacation and summer camps, and special events.
    • Take initiative to plan, organize, and implement high activity games, program special events and daily schedules, and community events.
    • Stay active and engaged with youth and teens.
    • Act as a professional role model, mentor, and leader.
    • Enforce guidelines and maintain a safe, clean, well-organized environment.
    • Communicate effectively and respectfully with youth, parent/guardians, staff, and community members.
    • Provide exemplary customer service.
    • Attend monthly staff meetings and trainings.
    • Work closely with external organizations and staff.
    • May provide leadership to staff

    Education and Training Guidelines
    Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to qualify would be:

    Recreation Leader I : Completion of eighth grade. No previous experience required. Volunteer or paid experience with groups of children is desirable.

    Recreation Leader II : Completion of the ninth grade. Experience as a participant in a variety of recreation activities. Some experience in group leadership is desirable.

    Special Requirements
    Ability to lift and move equipment (up to 25 lbs.); complete forms and reports; ability to set-up and coordinate activities; remain calm and use good judgment in difficult and emergency situations; work flexible hours. Physical strength and stamina will be required in some positions to perform demonstrations and leads activities.

    Licenses, Certificates, Registration
    • Certificates : American Red Cross Community First Aid and Safety Course or equivalent (including adult, child infant CPR, and Standard First Aid) or ability to obtain at the beginning of employment.
    • All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.

    Selection Process
    Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process. The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview.

    Expected Dates for Interviews (subject to change):
    Oral Panel Interview: Week of April 20

    Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. The City of Foster City reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.

    Foster City is located midway between San Francisco and San Jose on the western shoreline of the San Francisco Bay, east of U.S. 101, which provides convenient access to the San Francisco Airport with San Francisco to the north and Santa Clara County to the south. EMID provides water and sewer service to Foster City and water service to Mariner’s Island and is a separate legal entity with the City Council serving as its Board of Directors. During the initial stages of Foster City’s development, new growth was mainly residential or residential serving in nature. Since 1980, several major commercial and research and development uses have been completed, adding a substantial daytime work force population to the City and providing employment opportunities to Foster City residents. The largest employers today include VISA and Gilead Sciences.
