Position: Law Clerk to Judge Jeffrey Bates
Job location: Offices of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Southern District, in Springfield, Missouri
Start date: August 2026
Application deadline: Initial review of applications will begin February 17, 2026; the position will remain open until filled
Duties and responsibilities:- Review briefs, motions, and other case filings
- Conduct thorough and comprehensive legal research on a wide range of topics
- Prepare written memos
- Draft, proofread, and cite-check judicial opinions
- Attend oral arguments
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum qualifications:
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirementsby the start date:- Hold a Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent degree from an accredited law school
- Be a member of The Missouri Bar or be eligible to sit for the Missouri bar examination
Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:- Exceptional legal research, writing, and critical reasoning skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Proficiency with legal research and word processing technologies, including Westlaw and Microsoft Word
Salary and benefits: The anticipated starting salary is $60,000 per year. This position is eligible for certain state benefits, including health insurance, life insurance, deferred compensation plan, and retirement plan (after applicable vesting period).
