    About the Opportunity

    The City of Ventura is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Supervisor to join our team! In this role, you will plan, organize, and supervise the activities and staff responsible for the construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair of City buildings and facilities. This position oversees and coordinates facilities maintenance and custodial programs to ensure City facilities are safe, functional, and well maintained. The incumbent may be required to work standby on a rotational basis and respond to callback assignments as needed, with the ability to report to work within a 45-minute timeframe.

    Key responsibilities include:
    • Supervise, lead, and participate in facilities maintenance and custodial operations, including building repairs, preventive maintenance, building automation systems, energy efficiency, graffiti removal, and life-safety systems.
    • Plan, assign, schedule, and inspect staff work; ensure quality, safety, and compliance with City policies and regulatory requirements.
    • Recruit, train, evaluate, and supervise assigned staff; provide coaching, safety training, and performance management in accordance with City policies and labor agreements.
    • Develop and implement maintenance programs, work plans, and procedures; oversee the computerized maintenance management system and asset preservation efforts.
    • Establish service schedules, identify resource needs, and allocate staff, materials, and equipment using best management practices.
    • Prepare and manage budgets; monitor expenditures, forecasts, reimbursements, and operational performance metrics.
    • Conduct field inspections and assessments of City facilities; oversee hazardous materials inspections, custodial services, graffiti removal, and maintenance contracts.
    • Manage facilities maintenance projects and renovations, including contract administration, scope development, inspections, and coordination of capital improvement projects.
    • Supervise operation and compliance of fire alarm, access control, energy management, and other building systems.
    • Respond to emergencies, public inquiries, and complaints; coordinate with City departments and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and the public.
    • Stay current on industry best practices and technologies; recommend operational improvements and support long-term planning efforts.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.


    The Ideal Candidate - Preferred Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will:
    • Have demonstrated experience supervising facilities maintenance operations, including building systems, preventive maintenance programs, and custodial services.
    • Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to train, motivate, and manage staff while fostering a safe and productive work environment.
    • Bring solid knowledge of building systems, life-safety requirements, and regulatory compliance, along with experience overseeing contractors and maintenance projects.
    • Be organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage budgets, prioritize workloads, and respond effectively to emergencies and customer service needs.


    Minimum Qualifications - Required

    Education and Experience: A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to one of the following: a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of facilities construction and maintenance experience; an associate’s degree and four years of facilities construction and maintenance experience; or six years of facilities construction and maintenance experience. At least one year of lead or supervisory experience is required.

    License: Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license is required.

    Certificate: A Building Operator Level II (BOMA) certification is desirable.

    The Facilities Maintenance Supervisor classification is a first-line supervisory position in the Public Works Department. The supervisor is responsible for the direct oversight, supervision and evaluation of an employee work unit, functioning independently while exercising considerable independent judgment and making sound decisions. This classification is distinguished from the supervising manager classification in that the latter has management responsibility over a variety of functional areas.
