    The City of Buena Park's Community Services Department is seeking responsible, enthusiastic, and energetic individuals who are interested in joining our Summer Aquatics Program as a Lifeguard!

    *All applicants must be a minimum of sixteen years of age or older at the time of application.

    The City's Aquatics Program is offered to the community starting in May with hours available through mid-October! The Aquatics Program is dedicated to providing quality programs to create a safe and fun atmosphere at the local pools for the Buena Park community. Lifeguard Certification Training is provided!

    The Lifeguard position is a part-time, non-benefited, position working 15-20 hours per week. This position requires the availability to work a flexible work schedule that include mornings, afternoons (after-school hours) , evenings, weekends, and holidays beginning May 2026.     GENERAL PURPOSE

    Under general supervision, the Lifeguard applies life saving and swimming principles and practices; first aid principles and practices; and does related work as required.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

    This position provides an opportunity for incumbents with an interest in pursuing a career in municipal government to learn about municipal government functions and gain experience by completing tasks and special assignments related to the program area.

    The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

    Maintains and works safely with materials and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of swimming pools.Performs maintenance and cleaning services of pool and other assigned areas.Establishes and maintains effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.Maintains accurate records, daily logs, and prepares incident, accident, and operations reports.Passes initial and follow-up tests of safety and pool procedures as well as successfully complete routine skills testing such as backboard drills and CPR reviews.Attends and participates in staff trainings and exercise workouts during evening hours or weekends as assigned.Ensures an excellent guest experience.Adheres to City and departmental policies and procedures.Observes and supervises swimmers in the pool areas.Identifies and prevents unsafe conditions or potential hazards.Identifies and rescues persons in distress or in danger of drowning; provides emergency care as necessary.Explains and enforces pool rules, regulations and facility use in order to provide a safe and accident-free pool environment.Monitors water clarity; inspects pool facilities and reports unsafe conditions.Removes and replaces pool covers and lane lines.Provide customer services and information to guest, report complaints, special requests, safety conditions, security issues and illegal activity.May assist and/or instruct swim lessons.Assists with citywide special events and community recreation activities.

    Knowledge of:

    Professional lifesaving standards; methods of organizing, conducting and supervising aquatic programs; swimming pool rules and general care of children.

    Ability to:

    Perform basic arithmetic; plan, organize and conduct aquatic programs to completion; maintain accurate records and prepare reports and communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, volunteers, participants, and the public; pass a swim test and demonstrate ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

    EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

    Any education, training or experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be direct experience in leadership, volunteerism or participation in aquatic activities.

    LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    All Lifeguard applicants must possess the following valid American Red Cross Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/AED, Lifesaving for the Professional Rescuer, Standard First Aid or equivalent within 30 days of appointment.

    All applicants must be a minimum of sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application.

    *Interviews and a Water Assessment are REQUIRED exams for this position.*

    Fingerprinting:

    Applicants who are selected for hire are fingerprinted during the pre-placement processing period. All fingerprints will be processed with the Department of Justice to verify criminal records or absence thereof.

    Physical Examination:

    A conditional offer of employment is based upon the successful completion of a pre-placement medical exam to determine a candidate's fitness to perform the essential functions of the position. Physicals are performed by the City's designated physician at the City's expense and may include a drug and alcohol screening.

    SALARY RANGE: Composed of six (6) steps - Entry step through E step (Except management positions). Each step represents an increase of approximately five (5) percent.

    RETIREMENT: Provided through deferred compensation 457 plan administered by Nationwide Retirement Solutions. Employee pays member contribution of 3.75%. The City matches the employee's contribution of 3.75%.
