    The Missouri State Public Defender (MSPD) is an agency dedicated to providing legal representation to individuals who are unable to afford an attorney in criminal cases. We are committed to upholding the constitutional right to counsel and ensuring fair and just legal proceedings for all citizens.

    MSPD is seeking a detail-oriented and dependable Operations Assistant to support the daily operations of our Columbia office, with an strong emphasis in financial processes. You’ll play a key role in maintaining front office operations, assisting internal departments, and ensuring smooth communication and client service.     Administrative Support:

    • Serve as front desk receptionist: greet visitors, answer phones, handle mailroom functions, and maintain a professional office environment
    • Monitor and respond to email inboxes
    • Assist with processing applications for public defender services and determining client eligibility
    • Prepare and ship USPS and UPS mail; maintain addresses in the UPS system
    • Maintain organized and well-stocked mailroom and supply areas
    • Assist with scanning, redacting, and releasing client files
    • Transfer and track scheduled collect calls
    • Support updates to MSPD internal documentation systems and databases
    • Provide administrative support to Human Resources, Financial, and IT departments
    • Assist with basic office facility duties, such as recycling and maintaining common areas


    Financial Support:

    • Accept and process client fee payments, prepare bank deposits, and maintain lien & recoupment records
    • Print and mail debt offset notices; monitor L&R database for missing or incorrect information
    • Assist with reviewing and processing retainer fee invoices
    • Perform other financial duties as assigned


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Three years of experience in office or customer service-oriented work

    • Post-secondary education may be substituted for required experience



    Preferred Skills:

    • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
    • Excellent communication skills
    • High accuracy and speed in data entry
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and database systems
    • Commitment to professionalism and confidentiality
    • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team
    • Knowledge of basic accounting/bookkeeping practices & processes


    This is a full-time position based in Columbia.
