DescriptionCASUAL SPORTS OFFICIAL(Youth Basketball League Official) (Sports Official-Job code 9426)
Note: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). *Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (8) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).
Basketball official (referee/scorekeeper) positions are available for the Sunnyvale Youth Basketball League. This program serves kindergarten through eighth-grade boys and girls. Basketball league games begin on Saturday, January 18, and end on Saturday, March 8; shifts are available between 7:15 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at various Sunnyvale school and city facilities. Training dates are January 4 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; attendance is required. The program is a non-competitive league that encourages everyone to play and learn the game.
Essential Job Functions- Basic knowledge of high school basketball rules and understanding of skills necessary to play basketball.
- Can officiate while instructing players on basketball skills and game rules.
- Assist with score-keeping
- Interact and communicate effectively with children, parents, coaches and City staff
- Ensure the safety and well-being of program participants
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires ability to perform moderate physical activity that may include standing, walking, running, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting and reaching in the performance of daily activities. Additionally, the position requires ability to see and read printed material with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly. The need to lift, drag and push objects weighing up to 10 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.
Minimum Qualifications- Minimum age: 16 years old
- Ability to work with and effectively communicate to parents and coaches is highly desirable.
- Ability to develop and maintain a high standard of professional conduct and civil responsibility.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record, or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority.
