Job Description
The City of Menlo Park is hiring Recreation Specialists to support City-operated Summer Camp programs serving children ages 4.5 through 13 years old for programs running June 15th through August 14th, 2026.
Under general supervision, Recreation Specialists provide direct supervision of participants and assist with age-appropriate recreational, enrichment, and physical activities in compliance with California Community Care Licensing (Title 22) requirements and City policies. This position requires active engagement with children, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to maintain required staff-to-child ratios.
This is an hourly, at-will, part-time (non-benefited) position offering paid training and valuable experience in youth development and public service.
Schedule
- Part to Full-day summer camp shifts
- Up to 8.5 hours per day, including a 30-minute unpaid meal period
- Potential opportunity for continued part-time employment during the school year in our after school programs or other recreation programs.
Essential Duties
- Supervise and engage children in a safe, inclusive environment
- Lead and assist with games, sports, arts and crafts, and group activities
- Support daily routines, transitions, and clean-up
- Use positive behavior guidance strategies
- Follow Title 22, City policies, and safety procedures
Ideal Candidate
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of paid experience working in a recreation program-type setting.
- Must have experience supervising children, teens, adults, and/or seniors.
Benefits
Salary
Recreation Specialist: $19.29 - $23.02 per hour
These are non-benefited, temporary positions. A temporary employee may not work more than 1,000 hours per year and will receive sick leave in accordance with State law.

The City Council is the City's five-member governing body whose members serve at-large for four-year overlapping terms in general municipal elections. The City Council selects from among its members, the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem to one-year terms at its first meeting in December of each year. The Mayor, who represents the City of Menlo Park, serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and signs enacting ordinances and contracts. The Menlo Park City Council meetings are generally Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the City Council Chambers located at 701 Laurel Street. Menlo Park’s City Councilmembers serve part-time, retaining their positions in private industry, personal enterprise, business or the professions. -
