Overview The Public Works Technician II-Surface is responsible for safe and efficient operation of a variety of heavy and highly complex equipment in their effort to meet the yearly goal of pavement repair and maintenance and pothole patching within 5 days' notice.
Responsibilities - Operates various street construction/maintenance equipment not limited to but including trucks rollers, compactors, street brooms, grad-all, motor grader, planers, reclaimers, asphalt, skid steer, and various other street maintenance equipment in the process of repairing and maintaining streets
- Understands of how to use the equipment to achieve the desired results based off plans and specifications
- Conducts pre-start inspections on all equipment prior to operating and performs minor repairs and/or maintenance as needed to assigned equipment
- Completes daily reports and paperwork as needed
- May be assigned other responsibilities and duties as needed
- Performs labor activities not limited to but including loading and unloading tools and materials, shoveling, sweeping, raking, smoothing and tamping various materials in different stages of construction
- Uses air compressor tools such as jackhammers and compactors
- Sprays oils from distributors and other equipment as needed
- Follows the Traffic control standards as per the Texas MUTCD Work Zone Traffic Control Guide
- Assists in development of traffic control plan for each job including responsible for implementing basic Traffic Control Procedures
- Directs traffic control at jobsite by flagging, cones, barrels and barricades
- Sets up message boards, water barrier, Type I, II, and III Barricade during normal & emergency operations
- Cleans around street maintenance yard: mow grass and use weed eater around obstacles
- Sweeps curb and gutters, remove trash, and dispose of properly
- Operates power equipment and hand tools to complete job tasks
- Maintains safekeeping of materials and supplies in storage area
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work - Non-Exempt - Full-Time
- Non-rotating 40-hour work week, Monday - Thursday, 6:30am - 5:30pm
- Must be available to work additional hours as needed
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
- In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma/GED
- Four (4) years of experience
Licenses and Certifications Required - A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring
- Required within six (6) months of hire
- Certification in confine space
- Certification in Traffic Control & Flagging
- Certification in Trenching and Shoring
Preferred • Texas Commercial Driver License Class A with air brake endorsement
