THE POSITION: Under general direction, performs supervision and technical work in the operation, maintenance or repair of municipal facilities and equipment; participates in staff selection, training and development; organizes, assigns and reviews the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled employees; oversees assignment of equipment; evaluates employee performance; recommends progressive discipline; prepares technical reports, correspondence and other written materials; maintains records; identifies and resolves problems; performs administrative analyses in support of department or division activities; responds to emergencies and public inquires; participates in budget preparation; participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards; performs special projects or other work as required.
Representative DutiesThe following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting.
Essential Duties: Makes regular inspections of wastewater treatment plants to ensure operations are meeting established standards; Supervises the repair and overhaul of engines, pumps and other plant machinery; Supervises the maintenance, modification and repair of buildings, installations, instrumentation, electrical equipment and grounds; Supervises laboratory personnel and adjusts plant processes based on laboratory test results; Estimates cost of damaged equipment and prepares requisition for replacement; Assists in the review of plans and specifications for additions and expansions of the wastewater treatment facilities.

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in the appropriate program or related technical area (Fleet, General Services, Parks, Trees, Solid Waste, Streets, Water, Wastewater, etc.) AND
- Three (3) years’ experience in the appropriate program or related technical area of which two years have been at a lead/supervisory level; OR
- An equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities to perform the described job duties.
- Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license.
- Possession of a Grade III or higher Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board is required in Wastewater.
Examination (Weighted: 100%) ORAL APPRAISAL INTERVIEW (Weighted 100%): (Tentative) Week of January 14th, 2026 An appraisal will be made of the applicant's experience, education, training, certification, knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal qualifications for the position. A minimum passing score of 70% is required.
