    This is a temporary part-time “extra help" at-will position working up to 20 hours per week and paid on an hourly basis.Individuals may be assigned to work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Extra help positions work less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July 1-June 30) subject to budget availability and agency needs.

    About the Opportunity

    Under general supervision, the Fire Cadet performs a variety of routine and supportive duties that assist Fire Department personnel in daily operations. The position is designed to provide valuable exposure to fire service operations, procedures, and work environments as preparation for a future career in the fire service.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • Stocking and maintaining emergency equipment and supplies in fire vehicles and stations.
    • Transporting fire vehicles to the City garage for maintenance.
    • Picking up and delivering equipment, materials, and intra-department mail.
    • Providing non-emergency support during emergency incidents, such as logistical assistance.
    • Assisting with department training activities and drills.
    • Supporting Fire personnel with public education events and fire extinguisher demonstrations.
    • Conducting Fire Department station tours.
    • Performing computer data entry and assisting with data collection.
    • Sorting and compiling emergency medical data.
    • Performing other duties as assigned.


    The Ideal Candidate - Preferred Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will:
    • Demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a career in the fire service and a commitment to continuous learning.
    • Show reliability, responsibility, and the ability to follow instructions and complete tasks with accuracy.
    • Exhibit professionalism, integrity, and a positive attitude while working with Fire personnel and the community.
    • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
    • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Maintain physical stamina appropriate for assisting with Fire Department operations.
    • Display initiative and a willingness to take on new tasks and challenges.
    • Work respectfully and collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


    Minimum Qualifications - Required

    A combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school is required. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment. Actively working toward a Fire Science degree and/or pursuing a career in the fire service is highly desirable. Prior to final appointment, candidates will be required to successfully complete an in-depth background investigation, including a records check, fingerprinting, and a review of driving history.

    Licenses

    Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record are required.
