The PositionThe list developed from this recruitment will be used for a limited period to fill open and promotional, regular full-time, and part-time positions in the Sheriff's Office, should they occur.Under general supervision ensures the integrity and security of evidence; performs a variety of complex technical and office support tasks related to evidence identification, collection, transportation and preservation.

Job Requirements and Minimum QualificationsDuties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Receives evidence delivered by field officers; identifies by type, quantity and case number; records and stores items into main storage facility.
- Uses safety precautions and follows procedures to properly handle items such as firearms and other weapons, chemical samples biological substances, blood, drugs, syringes, and other material to prevent injury, avoid contamination, and assure chain of custody.
- Maintains records and files related to evidence and chain of custody; responds to outside agency requests and/or processes disposition of items in accordance with all state and local laws
- Handles and transports evidence to and from various locations.
- Responds to alarms related to facility on an on-call basis.
- Disposes of property and evidence in accordance with all state and local laws; identifies owners of property, current residence of owner, verifies history and reasonable proof of ownership on returns; coordinates and disposes of property through County auction.
- Disposes of and/or destroys syringes, blood, urine and other medical waste materials, controlled substances, firearms, ammunition and Coroner’s property; prepares needed documents, writes court overture on required order; assists in and/or performs presumptive drug and narcotic tests prior to destruction; transports items to appropriate facilities for proper destruction.
- Prepares supplemental reports; testifies in court regarding chain of custody and property records; coordinates and assists with viewing of evidence by defense attorney, investigators, members of District Attorney’s office or other appropriate persons.
- Prepares detailed records of evidence inventory and maintains orderly appearance of property file area; catalogs and maintains continuous property inventory records.
- Keeps abreast of current laws, codes, regulations, and legal procedures as they pertain to property and evidence.
- Participates in meetings with Sheriff’s personnel, investigators, Department of Justice representatives or others for the purpose of gathering and exchanging information relative to investigations.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREDEducation and Experience:High school diploma or GED, and one year of experience in a high public contact work environment such as storekeeper, stock clerk, property clerk, or in a law enforcement agency.
Licenses and Certifications:Valid Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of:
- Methods and techniques for the proper collection, identification and preservation of evidence.
- Applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations.
- Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.
- Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the identification, marking, preservation, and presentation of evidence.
- Court procedures and operations.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors,
- Principles and practices of work safety, including the handling of urine and blood samples.
- Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
- General office procedures, policies and practices.
- All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.
Skill in:- Interpreting and applying a variety of regulations and procedures dealing with criminal investigations.
- Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
- Maintaining detailed logs, records and inventory by effectively filing, indexing, and organizing a variety of property items.
- Organizing work, setting priorities, meeting critical deadlines, and following up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
- Collecting, processing, and documenting evidence.
- Applying logical thinking to solve problems or accomplish tasks; to understand, interpret and communicate complicated policies, procedures and protocols.

HOLIDAYS AND PERSONAL LEAVEMendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24 - 48 hours of personal leave annually, depending upon Bargaining Unit.
VACATIONAccrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.
SICK LEAVEPaid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per month, or 15 days per year. Accruals are pro-rated for part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week, and extra-help employees receive up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave annually.
