OC Public Works (OCPW) provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through the sustainable delivery of projects and services. OC Public Works’ guiding principles are safety, integrity, quality, teamwork, and adaptability.
OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services, Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Fleet Services; OC Facilities Design & Construction; OC Facilities Maintenance; OC Infrastructure Programs; OC Operations & Maintenance.
OC Operations and Maintenance (O&M) This service area within OCPW, serves the citizens of Orange County by providing a safe environment and an enhanced quality of life through the maintenance of public roads, flood control channels, and bikeways. O&M provides a variety of services to Orange County's unincorporated areas and is responsible for maintaining 350 miles of roadway, 65 bridges, 380 miles of flood control channels, 6 dams, 10 pumping stations, and 26 basins. O&M also provides public works services for cities via service contracts. O&M plays a crucial role in responding to the needs of the public during and after emergency incidents such as storms, wildfires, and mudslides.
Employees within this department may be designated as a "key responder" and, as such shall be required to respond to non-normal working hour emergency operational conditions.

THE OPPORTUNITY OC Public Works has opportunities for the position of Maintenance Crew Lead I in its OC Operations and Maintenance area. The Maintenance Crew Lead I is distinguished by the scope and difficulty level of projects assigned. Incumbents are required to work from simple plans and specifications to repair, replace, or install public works infrastructure; generally, work with a single piece of equipment or various power tools; and are given wider latitude when making decisions in the field within established guidelines. The incumbents may report to a Public Works Maintenance Supervisor or Senior Maintenance Inspector and will supervise a crew of County maintenance personnel, court referral crews, or other assigned labor resources consistently performing unskilled or semi-skilled work.
Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to, road stenciling, hand-patch asphalt, graffiti removal, vegetation trimming, trash or debris removal, sign installation and repair, and fencing, which includes pouring foundations, installation or repairing gates, and arc welding.
The current vacancies are in the following units:
General Maintenance and City Contracts MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES The successful candidate will demonstrate two (2) or more years of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker II with the County of Orange
OR three (3) or more years of experience performing skilled maintenance and repair work in open spaces or facilities , with at least one (1) year of supervision or oversight experience over maintenance and/or construction trades personnel. In addition, experience supervising personnel in road, traffic control, and/ or flood facilities is highly desirable.
REQUIRED LICENSE Some assignments may require the possession of a valid California Class B or C Driver's License by date of appointment and while employed in this series.
- Class B - Required for positions in the General Maintenance/Environmental Maintenance and Field Services sections
- Class C - Required for positions in the City Contracts/Traffic Operations, General Maintenance/Graffiti Abatement, and Field Services sections
Some assignments may require the possession of a valid California Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with passenger endorsement, by the Probation date.
Some assignments may require the possession of or the ability to obtain an Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) issued Inmate Supervision Card.
In accordance with the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991, incumbents will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, and post-accident drug and alcohol testing.

Technical Knowledge & Experience- Knowledge and experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, flood control, and other public work facilities
- Demonstrate expertise in the use and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of roads, flood control, landscape, construction, and other public works facilities. Including but not limited to various hand tools, power tools, landscaping tools/equipment, high-pressure paint systems, pressure washers, forklifts, towable message/arrow boards, lift/boom trucks, etc.
- Understand and interpret symbols, signs, technical data, plans, and specifications required of the field
- Ability to use a Computerized Maintenance Management System, iPads, iPhones, 800 MHz radio system, mapping systems/programs, etc., for various communication and location of work in the field, to receive work orders, and document the completion of assignments
Safety Practices- Demonstrate the ability to ensure road and flood control facility maintenance and construction projects are carried out in a safe manner
- Knowledge of the proper material and equipment selection, traffic control, traffic safety rules, and utility protection required for working in a high-stress, high-traffic volume environment
- Follow strict guidelines for traffic safety regulations
- Knowledge and experience using personal protection equipment (PPE) and work site safety on various road rights-of-way and flood control channel work sites
- Knowledge of County, State, and Federal safety regulations, including reporting requirements
- Knowledge of and ability to perform preventive maintenance on various equipment, power tools, high-pressure paint systems, pressure washers, etc.
- Identify, report, and correct equipment problems in an efficient and timely manner
