    GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

    This position is located in a very remote and rugged portion of the Chihuahuan Desert with extreme heat in the summer. Amenities are limited and cell signals are not always reliable. It is highly recommended that applicants review, research, and visit the area before applying The Big Bend region is also a gorgeous part of Texas with some of the best outdoor recreational opportunities in the entire state. The area also features very mild to warm winters and is one of the most bio-diverse regions in Texas.

    Under the direction of the Park Superintendent, this position performs advanced (senior-level) maintenance and construction supervisory work. Responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, repair, and administrative tasks associated with all grounds, facilities, and equipment within Big Bend Ranch State Park. Serves as the Backup Utility Plant Operator and performs duties related to maintaining systems. Provides team leadership and technical guidance to employees and volunteer staff. Purchases supplies and materials; prepares required reports; assists in enforcement of park rules and regulations; provides visitor services including reservation, registration, issuing permits, licenses and collecting fees. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

    NOTE: The selected candidate may be required to live on-site with a monthly deduction of between $110.04 and $240.42 from their monthly paycheck.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from High School or GED.

    Experience :

    Four years facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience;

    Three years experience as a supervisor or team leader, which may include oversight of paid staff, volunteers, or alternative workforce.

    NOTE : Experience may have occurred concurrently.

    Licensure :

    Must possess a valid class "A" Texas Commercial driver's license OR must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license and convert to a class "A" Commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment;

    NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses and compliance with State and Federal regulations including the Department of Transportation (DOT) required drug and alcohol testing.

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within one year of employment, a Class "D" Surface Water Treatment license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

    NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license and compliance with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's (TCEQ) Criminal Conviction Guidelines.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    Experience :

    Experience working with the public.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of basic natural/cultural resource management.

    Knowledge of water and wastewater plant operation and repair.

    Knowledge of general office procedures.

    Knowledge of revenue collection.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in performing a variety of electrical, carpentry, and plumbing repairs to buildings, facilities, and grounds.

    Skill in the use of hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.

    Skill in using various hand and power tools and mechanized equipment.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.

    Skill in training others.

    Skill in planning, assigning and/or supervising the work of others.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to communicate effectively with the public.

    Ability to interpret park rules and regulations in a uniform manner.

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

    Ability to present natural/cultural resource based interpretive programs.

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to work in a public park with overnight and day use.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

    Required to work overtime as necessary.

    Required to respond to emergency situations.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to operate a State vehicle.

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

    Required to pass drug screening prior to employment.

    Required to pass a previous employment drug testing history verification for all CDL positions held within the past two years.

    Subject to random, post incident and reasonable cause testing for the duration of employment.

    Required to operate a State vehicle.

    Must conform to TPWD employee dress code, work rules and safety standards.

    Non-smoking environment in State office buildings and vehicles.

    Required to live on-site in State housing with a monthly deduction of $110.04 and $240.42. Housing rates are established by TPWD policy, calculated using federal guidelines, and may change according to market value.
