    Distinguishing Features of the Class

    Under general supervision, to participate in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, lighting, ventilating, air conditioning and other mechanical equipment on an assigned shift in order to acquire the skill and knowledge required for the position of Senior Building Equipment Operator; and to do related work as required.

    Senior Building Equipment Operator - Promotional Opportunity
    Employees holding the position of Building Equipment Operator (BEO) are eligible to be promoted to Senior Building Equipment Operator upon one year of successful service as a BEO and possession of a Second Class Engineer's license.

    Acceptable Experience and Training

    • Graduation from high school; and
    • Two years of experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment, preferably including HVAC operations and maintenance experience; or
    • Any equivalent combination in which education and experience are interchangeable at the rate of one year of education for one year of experience.


    Required Special Qualifications

    • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa.


    Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)

    • Operates and maintains building, ventilating and air conditioning systems and auxiliary equipment.
    • Performs the firing of boilers.
    • Observes meters and gauges and adjusts and repairs equipment.
    • Regulates fuel and water consumption and tests and treats water.
    • Records data concerning operating hours, temperatures, pressure and fuel consumption and maintains operating log.
    • Maintains general cleanliness of plant.
    • Makes repairs and performs lubrication and preventive maintenance on a variety of building and custodial equipment.
    • Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures including stools, urinals, faucet traps, and hot water heaters.
    • Assists in making electrical repairs.
    • Removes snow from sidewalks and walkways.
    • May aid and assist in supervising a crew of custodial workers; may perform custodial work as needed.
    • Performs related work as required.
