Milpitas Police Department provides 24 hours-a-day, 365 days-a-year policing services to the City, keeps the peace, and prevents & controls crime. The Department's nine functions include: Administration, Patrol Services, Traffic Safety Unit, Crossing Guards, Police Community Relations Unit, Investigations Unit, Communications Unit, Records Unit, and Personnel & Training.

Examples of DutiesDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Routinely assists patrol teams with non-enforcement duties; completes routine police reports; maintains records of daily work activities.
- Performs non-hazardous investigative duties related to the commission of crimes against property such as residential, commercial and vehicle burglary, petty theft, grand theft, vehicle theft and vandalism.
- Issues citations for parking and zoning violations
- Enforces laws and ordinances as required by the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program
- Testifies in court when necessary
- Provides traffic control at fire scenes, crime scenes, signal outages and as assigned
- Assists in the preparation of special events (i.e., Fourth of July, annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony)
Typical Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - Completion of high school or equivalent AND one year of experience involving a substantial amount of contact with the general public.
- Highly Desirable: Experience working in a law enforcement agency, in the capacity of Community Service Officer or related role.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE - Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's License

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires shift work, depending on the operational needs of the Department. Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:
Ability to work in a standard office environment; able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.
SELECTION PROCESS The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's education, training, and experience as stated in the application. Additional phases of the selection process for Police Department positions will consist of one or more interviews, personal history statement, Department of Justice/FBI fingerprint check, polygraph examination(s), background investigation, psychological screening, and pre-employment medical examination.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direct supervision from the Police Watch Commander and may receive indirect supervision from a Police Officer. Exercises no supervision.
