    Position Description

    At Tacoma Public Library (TPL), our mission is to empower our community by bringing people together to discover, connect, create, learn and thrive. We are seeking Library Community and Information Supervisors to provide day-to-day supervision of a neighborhood library or designated unit of the library. Supervisors assist the manager in the overall smooth operation of the neighborhood library or unit ensuring that everyone is welcome and well served. Performs a variety of duties that require thorough knowledge of library practices and procedures, as well as expertise in specific subject area(s) or communities of practice. Lead safety and security community of practice at assigned location maximizing safety for employees and patrons.

    Qualifications

    Five years of customer service experience including one year of experience in a public library.

    Desirable Qualifications
    • AA or bachelor’s degree desirable. Supervision or team leadership experience
    • Bilingual skills in English and another language relevant to the Tacoma community
    • Experience with Trauma Informed Care or Mental Health First Aid

    Knowledge & Skills

    • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and the skill and ability to effectively supervise a branch or unit
    • Good organization and problem-solving skills to handle day-to-day operations of branch or unit. Ability to exercise sound judgment in applying and interpreting library policies and procedure
    • Extensive, demonstrated skill in handling public contacts with skill and courtesy. Skill in resolving patron concern
    • Relational, welcoming all people to our library, building relationships and connecting with community
    • Cultural competency, demonstrating In-depth knowledge and skills working with a diverse workforce and community
    • Commitment to and demonstrated success discussing, integrating, and promoting racial equity, social justice, and accessibility
    • Commitment and demonstrated success building relationships and listening to our community, applying community input to develop customer focused programs and services
    • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with colleagues, treat others with respect, communicate, be honest and trustworthy, provide constructive feedback, contribute to high morale
    • Broad knowledge of popular culture including literature, music, media, movies
    • Broad knowledge of digital and technology trends
    • Reference resources, literature and readers advisory resources; the reference and readers’ advisory interview; available library technology; and cataloging rules and rules interpretation
    • Model de-escalation techniques and trauma informed care
    • Strong communication skills including writing skills, communicating in a timely, effective and professional manner
    • Anticipate and creatively solve problems and adjust to change with a flexible mindset
    • Attention to detail
    • Strong technical competency, troubleshooting of services offered through the library
    • Strong knowledge of library policies and procedures

    Interested individuals who meet the minimum qualification for this position must apply online. This position is covered by a Labor Agreement between the Tacoma Public Library and Local 120. Individuals given a conditional offer of employment must also pass a background check. New employees must successfully complete a six month probationary period prior to obtaining permanent status in this classification.

    Hourly Rate: $33.48 - $40.70
    Annual Salary: $69,638.40 - $84,656.00

    Paid leave: Library Employees are entitled to receive paid holidays, and Personal Time Off (PTO).

    Retirement: All employees of the Library except part-time Pages, temporary employees, and certain project employees, are included in the City of Tacoma Employees' Retirement System. All members of the Tacoma Employees' Retirement System are also covered by Social Security.

    The Tacoma Public Library is not a department of the City of Tacoma and the Library's employees are not employees of the City. The Library is a separate entity with its own governing body. The Library's governing body is the Tacoma Public Library Board of Trustees.

    Employees of the City of Tacoma who accept employment with the Tacoma Public Library will lose their City of Tacoma employee seniority. They will also find that their leave accruals, and some of the benefits enjoyed as employees of the City of Tacoma do not carry over when they are hired for a position with the Tacoma Public Library.
