Distinguishing Features of the ClassThe Police Department Training Coordinator is responsible for organizing, managing, and scheduling of professional development activities and training for sworn personnel of the Police Department. This includes in-service training, annual certifications, and ensuring department-wide compliance with state, local, and federal training mandates. The position serves as liaison with the Des Moines Regional Police Academy to ensure training continuity and record keeping. This position requires attendance at training sessions held during the daytime, evenings, and weekends.
The work is performed under an assigned supervisor and work is coordinated with Police Department Command Staff. Considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the City employees, vendors, and other work and training professionals. The work also requires an employee who is committed to a successful learning outcome and who facilitates teaching methods to a wide range of backgrounds, knowledge, and skill levels.

Acceptable Experience and Training- Associate degree in public safety, communication, education, or related field; AND
- Three years of experience in administrative, coordination, or project management experience in law enforcement; AND
- Five years of experience in law enforcement operations or public safety training, preferably within the Des Moines Police Department; OR
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

- Possession of a valid Iowa driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

- Coordinate and schedule internal and external training programs for police personnel.
- Ensure that all personnel are aware of training dates & locations.
- Track and maintain accurate training records, certifications, and compliance documentation in coordination with the Des Moines Regional Police Academy.
- Liaise with training providers, academies, and vendors to organize specialized or mandatory training.
- Evaluate training needs by working with command staff and officers.
- Prepare and manage the Police Department’s training calendar and annual training plan.
- Compile training reports and provide updates to department leadership.
- Manage the inventory of training materials, supplies, and classroom space.
- Ensure timely renewal of key certifications such as CPR and firearms.
- Assist in budget development and procurement for training-related expenses.
- Stay informed about industry trends, legal requirements, and best practices in police training.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
