    Job Location: Statewide



    Why you’ll love this position: The railroad safety inspector conducts routine grade crossing, track, hazardous materials, motive power and equipment, operating practices and/or signal inspections. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

    We are looking to hire three inspectors to join the rail section with the following specialties: Track, Signal and MPE (Motive Power and Equipment). This advertisement will remain open until filled.

    Note for internal applicants: Successful candidates already at rates above the posted salary will be evaluated on an individual basis to determine final salary outcome.

    • Conducts compliance inspections to ensure carriers maintain safe operations under federal and state regulations.
    • Conducts complaint investigations; obtains data from carriers, conducts interviews, on-site inspections, reviews records and other agency reports; develops a resolution process and prepares a close-out report; works with carriers, citizens, legislators, union representatives and other state and federal agencies to resolve issues.
    • Conducts safety inspections of railroad property, including carrier facilities, rolling stock and other equipment.
    • Conducts accident investigations to determine root cause; works independently or as a team member to conduct unassisted or joint investigations with law enforcement, federal investigators or carrier officials.
    • Works with state, federal and local law enforcement officials and carriers to support the secure movement of people and goods by establishing processes to identify threats and vulnerabilities to the rail network.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET.
    • Four years of recent relevant railroad experience OR completion of a Federal Railroad Administration-qualifying railroad apprentice training program. A bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related technical specialization may be substituted for two years of required experience.
    • Federal Railroad Administration Certification as a track inspector, hazmat inspector, motive power and equipment inspector, operating practices inspector, or signal and train control or grade-crossing signal inspector is preferred.
    • Successful completion of a Range of Motion examination.


    Special Working Conditions/Job Characteristics

    • Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
    • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
    • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
