    Role

    Under general supervision, performs skilled and safe work of considerable difficulty in the operation of heavy equipment for the construction, maintenance, and repair of county-maintained roads and/or county facilities and transfer stations.

    Major Duties, Responsibilities

    • Operates vehicles requiring a CDL and assists in loading and unloading materials.
    • Performs skilled and complex duties as a heavy equipment operator.
    • Acts as lead operator as necessary.
    • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
    • Operates countywide green waste processing operations.
    • Assists with the oversight of waste tire collection.
    • Acts as a lead in community clean-up events.
    • Provides oversight and maintenance of County landfills.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:
    A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in operating heavy equipment.

    Additional Requirements:
    Must possess a valid Arizona Class A Commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement.
    Obtain the following provided trainings/certifications within 1 year of employment:
    OSHA 30 Certification
    OSHA Forklift Certification

    Knowledge of:
    • Required safety standards expected for the operation of equipment.
    • Business English, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.
    • Filing and recordkeeping.
    • Current Microsoft Office software.
    • General maintenance practices.
    • Basic math and daily transaction reconciliation.
    • Clerical office practices and procedures.
    • Research techniques and report writing.
    • Handle cash and give change accurately.

    Skill in:
    • Customer Service
    • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing and communicating orally in a face-to-face setting and by telephone with public and employees.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public.
    • Organization and adherence to detail.

    Ability to:
    • Safely operate truck and or tractor.
    • Complete assigned tasks within the prescribed timeframe to a high degree of accuracy.
    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
    • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
    • Maintain accurate daily logs.
    • Remain current in knowledge required to perform assigned duties.
    • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
    • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

    Work Environment:
    The work environment is associated with a field environment year-round in all weather conditions and may include exposure to loud noise, dangerous emergency situations, dust, fumes, mist, and chemicals. Solid Waste: Hazardous Waste

    Physical Requirements:
    Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, walk over rough, uneven, and/or rocky surfaces, and lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
