    The Position

    This position requires a valid California Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with Air Brake Certification, at the time of application.

    The list developed from this recruitment will be used for a limited period to fill open and promotional, regular full-time, and part-time positions, should they occur.

    Under general supervision, operates, and maintains the County Bookmobile to provide library services to assigned locations in underserved and remote communities; Performs routine to moderately difficult tasks including circulation services, customer assistance, recordkeeping, loading and unloading library materials, and pre and post-trip vehicle inspections. Ensures the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of the vehicle while delivering high-quality library services to patrons at designated stops. Work is performed following established procedures and guidelines, with supervisory support available when needed.

    Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Drive bookmobile to and from assigned locations across Mendocino County, practicing safe and defensive driving techniques to provide library services to county residents in remote regions.
    • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections; promptly report maintenance needs to coordinate repairs; perform minor vehicle troubleshooting and repair to avoid emergency breakdowns.
    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the vehicle interior and exterior.
    • Set up the bookmobile for daily operations by loading and unloading books and other materials to keep the transported collection current.
    • Follow routes and schedule stops in coordination with library management direction to meet community needs.
    • Answer questions about library policies and services; provide routine reference information.
    • Support and participate in the promotion of library services, community engagement, outreach activities, and representation of the library at community events.
    • Maintain accurate records of bookmobile usage, prepare reports on circulation statistics, and track community engagement metrics as needed.
    • Assist patrons with accessing library resources as needed; check library materials in and process returned items for redistribution to library branches; issue library cards; assist patrons with locating materials, suggesting alternate titles when requested items are unavailable.
    • Assist in collaborating with library staff to coordinate inter-library loans or special requests for materials.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

    Education and Experience:
    High school diploma or GED; One (1) year of commercial driving experience.

    Licenses and Certifications:
    A valid California Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License, with Air Brake Certification, is required at the time of application

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Knowledge of:
    • Safe vehicle operation practices and Department of Transportation (DOT) commercial regulations.
    • Basic maintenance procedures for large vehicles.
    • Responsive customer service practices and community engagement strategies for promoting library services in diverse settings.
    • Basic familiarity with library environments and understanding of how libraries operate.
    • Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
    • Community interests and needs.


    Skill In:
    • Safely and defensively operating a large vehicle in various weather conditions and terrains.
    • Providing excellent customer service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds by providing assisting them and ensuring courteous, tactful, and composed interactions, even in potentially challenging or stressful situations.
    • Efficiently driving assigned routes while maintaining schedule adherence.


    Ability to:
    • Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
    • Operate standard office equipment, including computer equipment.
    • Accurately enter and retrieve data and information using a computer terminal.
    • While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, speak and hear. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is required to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds; tolerate exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining workspace, diesel exhaust fumes; travel to different sites and locations.

    SALARY
    Compensation is based on a five-step salary range, with annual merit-based increases within the salary range.

    RETIREMENT

    HOLIDAYS AND PERSONAL LEAVE
    Mendocino County observes 11 paid holidays per year. Employees are granted 24 - 48 hours of personal leave annually, depending upon Bargaining Unit.

    VACATION
    Accrues at the rate of two weeks per year for three years. Three weeks per year after three years, four weeks after eight years and five weeks after 15 years.

    SICK LEAVE
    Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of 1.25 days per month, or 15 days per year. Accruals are pro-rated for part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week. Part-time employees working less than 20 hours per week, and extra-help employees receive up to 24 hours (or 3 days) of paid sick leave annually.

    The County and the employee share the cost of an employee selected health care plan; enrollment in the plan includes $20,000 Life Insurance.
