PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS: Office location will be located in Wildlife District 1.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

Under the direction of the Big Game Program Director, the Desert Bighorn Sheep Program Leader is responsible for highly advanced (senior-level) consultative services and technical assistance work, including the oversight and coordination of statewide biological surveys, analyses and reporting of biological data, disease management, design and implementation of research projects, and management of desert bighorn sheep and javelina. Provides oversight for the restoration and translocation of desert bighorn sheep in Texas. Responsible for the coordination and development of regulations pertaining to harvest, management and permitting program for desert bighorn sheep and javelina. Oversees collection of data regarding stakeholder attitudes and preferences regarding desert bighorn sheep and javelina management. Serves as the primary contact for desert bighorn sheep and javelina in Texas and advises Executive Staff on issues pertaining to desert bighorn sheep and javelina. Primary liaison with other state wildlife agencies on desert bighorn sheep and javelina management and serves as the Texas representative on the WAFWA Wild Sheep Initiative and Desert Bighorn Council. Provides oversight of implementation of Desert Bighorn Sheep tag issuance. Collaborates with other Team Leaders on various other biological and sociological projects as needed. Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency and Division rules, regulations, and procedures.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education :

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S. degree in wildlife science, wildlife ecology, wildlife management or closely related field in natural resource management with major course work (24 hours minimum) in wildlife/habitat conservation, management and/or research.

Experience :

Five years of professional experience, not associated with the pursuit of undergraduate or graduate degree programs, as a wildlife biologist, ecologist, range scientist or as a closely related natural resource scientist.

Licensure :

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid Class "C" Texas driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS :

Experience :

Graduation from accredited college or university with an M.S. degree in the education fields may be substituted for one year of the required qualifying experience.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Ph.D. in the education fields may be substituted for two years of the required qualifying experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Knowledge of big game physiology and ecology, wildlife management principles, program and project planning, scientific methods and research design, population dynamics and biometrics, especially for big game species.

Knowledge of bighorn sheep management, regulatory and research issues relevant to Texas.

Knowledge of javelina management, regulatory and research issues relevant to Texas.

Knowledge of basic range, agricultural and habitat management practices commonly used in Texas.

Knowledge of statistical computer software.

Knowledge of federal and state regulations and rules related to big game species.

Knowledge of applicable policies, administrative codes, and statutes.

Knowledge of administrative practices and procedures.

Skill in operating personal computers and software commonly used by TPW, including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

Skill in using common GIS software, including ArcGIS, Survey123, Field Maps, and GIS.

Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department and other State agencies and organizations.

Skill in implementing effective and efficient work protocols.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Required to work on holidays, weekends and hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. as necessary.

Required to perform aerial surveys.

Required to perform work at high altitudes.

Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions and with heavy insect infestations.

Required to operate a State vehicle.

Required to travel 25% with possible overnight stays.

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
