A Director of Maintenance Airports directs, or assists in the direction of comprehensive maintenance including remodeling, repair, rehabilitation, and force account construction programs involving airports operated by the Los Angeles World Airports. The responsibilities include managing the maintenance of buildings, field facilities, utility systems, custodial services, fleet operation, waste management, and equipment; applies sound managerial principles and techniques in building and maintaining an effective work group; and fulfills equal employment opportunity responsibilities.
REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)
Two years of full-time paid experience as an Airports Maintenance Superintendent, or in a position which is at that level, as a second-level full-time supervisor of journey-level craft workers in construction, building maintenance, street maintenance or equipment repair.

The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Supervision; Fiscal Management; Interpersonal Skills; Teamwork; Oral Communication; Leadership; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: materials, industry standard practices, equipment, and work standards employed in the modification, repair, preventive maintenance, custodial care, and operation of airfield facilities, large buildings, utility infrastructure, building systems and equipment, waste management, recycling, and fleet management; Federal, State, and City laws, ordinances, rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to the construction, maintenance, repair, and closure of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) passenger facilities, administrative buildings, and airfields, including marking and lighting requirements for runways, taxiways and parking aprons, and traffic control on restrictive aircraft movement areas ; LAWA procedures in the event of an emergency; operation and maintenance requirements, such as City and County Health Codes, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Building and Safety requirements for elevators, escalators, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing, electrical systems, energy management systems, and equipment in large buildings ; City and LAWA contracting procedures, and the methods and techniques used to develop and prepare contract specifications; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to prepare some written material related to the duties and responsibilities of a Director of Maintenance Airports. This essay material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory essay will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory essay must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory essay for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory essay and meet the minimum qualification as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.
The advisory essay will be administered on-line . Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory essay. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line advisory essay between TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2025 and TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2025. Candidates who fail to complete the advisory essay as instructed may be disqualified.
Candidates will be notified later by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of NOVEMBER 10, 2025 to NOVEMBER 21, 2025.

Candidates in the examination process may file protests as provided in Sec. 4.20, 4.22, and 4.23 as applicable and within the required time frame; however, the Personnel Department may respond to and resolve protests prior to the establishment of the eligible list.
