    Full-time position available with the City Manager's Office, City Communications Office, located at 414 E 12th St.
    Starting Salary: $4,619/Month
    Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00a.m.-4:00p.m.

    Responsibilities

    The City Communications Office is seeking an experience wordsmith to support the Health Department's communications and public information needs across multiple public health programs and services. Works under the direction of Communications Department leadership to deliver clear, accurate, and culturally appropriate health messaging that aligns with citywide communications strategy.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Assists in planning and executing communications strategies for the Health Department's many divisions and programs, such as disease prevention, maternal and child health, immunizations, environmental health, and emergency preparedness.
    • Drafts and edits press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, and other public information materials on public health topics.
    • Coordinates with media outlets to arrange interviews and support coverage of public health initiatives.
    • Helps manage social media accounts with engaging, accessible, and culturally sensitive health content.
    • Writes and updates website content to ensure the public has clear, up-to-date information about health programs and services.
    • Supports health education campaigns by producing promotional materials, social media graphics, and basic photo/video content.
    • Collaborate across an array of public health programs and divisions
    • Assists with organizing and staffing public events such as health fairs, vaccination clinics, press conferences, and community outreach sessions.
    • Participates in public health emergency communication efforts, including risk communication and timely updates for residents and media.
    • Ensures all messaging reflects best practices in public health communication, plain language, and health literacy principles.
    • Performs other duties as assigned to support the Health Department's mission to improve and protect community health.



    Qualifications

    REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional experience in business or public sector administration to include at least 2 years performing administrative and/or supervisory work involving more complex projects or programs; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience with at least 2 years performing administrative and/or supervisory work involving more complex projects or programs. Preference given to candidates with Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Health, English, or a related field. At least 3 years of experience in public relations, journalism, government communications, or health education, with demonstrated experience writing and producing public-facing content. Direct experience working on public health communication or health education strongly preferred. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and virtual meeting platforms. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.

    The minimum education requirement for positions that allow for experience equivalency for an accredited degree is a high school diploma. Unless otherwise specified, an accredited degree must be obtained from a college or university listed with the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
    For positions with a salary grade of EX6 or higher that require an accredited degree, qualifying professional experience must be obtained AFTER the accredited degree is obtained.
    Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

    If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
