The City of Ventura is now accepting applications for the position of
FIRE BATTALION CHIEF (Promotional Only).
The Fire Battalion Chief works under the direction of the Operations Chief and is responsible for supervising the activities of an assigned battalion of fire companies and coordinating activities with other shifts, divisions, and programs in the Fire Department and the City. The Fire Battalion Chief performs a leadership role in the City disaster response plan. Battalion Chiefs may be assigned to a fifty-six (56) or forty (40) hour per week position.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
- Provides direct supervision and leadership to all company officers assigned to a shift. Monitors the activities of assigned companies and implement necessary steps to ensure maximum effectiveness.
- Actively participates as a member of the department's management team, assisting in the development of the annual budget and other programs.
- Assumes a leadership role in the City's emergency response plan.
- Responds to, and takes command of, significant emergency incidents such as fires, medical, hazardous materials and other emergencies and rescue operations.
- Evaluates department equipment and facilities and makes recommendations for repair and replacement.
- Schedules and coordinates several departmental programs related to the delivery of emergency services to the public and delivery of fire prevention and public education programs.
- Manage employees in all aspects of fire department operations.
- Make public presentations.
- Represents the department and/or the City to organizations, boards, commissions and other groups.
- Operates radio, telecommunications and office equipment, including computers, as required.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:A combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to graduation from high school and seven years of progressively responsible experience in a public fire agency including two years’ experience as a Fire Captain with the Ventura Fire Department. A four-year degree supplemented with significant coursework or special training in a related field is desirable. A management certificate and/or training in effective management practices is highly desirable.
License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.
Certificate: Possession of a current and valid EMT-1 or EMT-P certification. Possession of a current and valid CPR certification.

The selection process may involve any or all of the following: a written communication exercise, a comprehensive assessment of the professional and personal skills and abilities, a review of past performance appraisals, recommendations from previous supervisors, recommendations from the management team, and a department selection interview. The Fire Chief may select any candidate whose name has been certified to the eligibility list.
The Eligibility List established for this classification may be used to fill other regular and temporary vacancies at the discretion of the City.
