    Substitute Teacher Pay Schedule -

    Early Care and Education,

    Substitute Permit

    $250 Day 1-20

    $260 Day 21-40

    $270 Day 41+,

    Child Care Assistant (CCA) $175/day

    Associate Teacher $200/day

    Site Supervisor $240/day

    Substitute Trainee (working towards a CD permit) $18.63/hour

    Apprentice - hourly rate based on permit held

    Special Ed, Juvenile Court and

    Community Schools


    $250 Day 1-20

    $260 Day 21-40

    $270 Day 41+,

    Hold appropriate credential for assignment $285 Day

    Days are cumulative from one assignment to another and from one school year to the next

    To be considered for a Substitute Teacher assignment, applicant must have:

    • Bachelor's degree
    • CTC live scan
    • Eligibility for 30-day substitute permit , OR
    • Valid CA teaching credential
    NOTE: Child Development applicants only do not require any of the above if they qualify for a Child Development Permit ( Assistant permit or higher). See information here .

    On-boarding Stipend - Receive $300 when cleared to start

    Full workday = 4+ hours paid a full day, under 4 hours is half pay

    Substitute teachers (Special ED & JCCS) with the appropriate program credential $285 per day

    Long-Term rate, 10+ consecutive days in the same assignment $285 per day, retro to Day 1,

    approved by the program. For ECE program - applies to substitute permit only

SBCEO offers 200 distinct programs and services in support of nearly 70,000 children throughout Santa Barbara County.     SBCEO is one of 58 county offices in California. County offices support local school districts by providing services that can be delivered more efficiently and economically at the county level. These include implementing new standards, staff development and training programs; fiscal support for districts including payroll; designing business and personnel systems; and performing many other services to meet the changing needs of local school districts. County offices of education also provide a wide range of instructional programs, including special education, early childhood education, career and technical education, programs for youth at risk, and instruction in juvenile detention facilities.   

    The Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO) is an intermediate agency between the California State Department of Education and the 20 school districts that are located within the county's boundaries. Our mission is to provide service and leadership for students, educators, school districts, and finance.  

    SBCEO student services include Special Education Programs, Child Development and Early Education Programs, Children's Creative Project, Transitional Youth Services, Juvenile Court and Community Schools, Migrant Education, Nurses and Psychologists, and Regional Occupational Program and Career Technical Education.  

    Teacher and administrator services include Credential Services, Educational Technology Services, Peer Assistance and Review Program, Professional Development and technical assistance, Teacher Induction Program, teacher support and recognition programs, classified employee recognition programs, and technology training.  

    SBCEO special programs include Author-Go-Round, Battle of the Books, Breakfast with the Authors, CATCH, Children and Family Resource Services, Computers for Families, County Spelling Bee, I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival, Industry-Education Councils, Mock Trial, Partners In Education volunteer coordination program, Public Health/School Nurse Partnership, Retirement counseling for STRS members, Showcase of Innovative Learning, Tobacco Use Prevention Education, THRIVE Guadalupe, and Welcome Every Baby.
