    Under general supervision, prepares and positions patients for a variety of medical imaging procedures ranging from routine diagnostic x-rays to highly-specialized diagnostic tests.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
    The Ventura County Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care seeks a highly skilled Ultrasound Specialist to join the team, specializing in medical imaging with a strong emphasis on maternal-fetal medicine. The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge and experience in the care of high-risk pregnancies, utilizing advanced imaging techniques to ensure the best outcomes for both mother and fetus.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:

    This Medical Imaging Specialist II position performs duties more independently in their respective specialty area of Ultrasound. This position will possess the necessary certifications, licenses, and experience to perform the duties in Ultrasound.

    Medical Imaging Specialist II is the journey level of the Medical Imaging Specialist series. Incumbents have a minimum of two (2) years of experience and perform their duties more independently in their respective specialty areas.

    EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.

    DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care - Mandalay Bay Women and Children’s Medical Group

    Medical Imaging Specialist II is represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only, which is a Regular position.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Prepares and positions patients for examination according to approved modality protocols;
    • Operates various portable and stationary ultrasound machines throughout the clinic to obtain images for diagnostic interpretation by Radiologists;
    • Completes billing processes for each patient encounter, utilizing all Radiology department electronic systems and the hospital electronic medical record system;
    • Independently performs the full range of sonographic examinations that require a comprehensive knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and sonographic principles;
    • Performs Ob/Gyn sonograms, biophysical profiles and AFI's (Amniotic Fluid Index);
    • Assists with amniocentesis procedures;
    • Performs sonographic evaluations of fetal morphology, age, growth assessment, and color doppler studies;
    • Performs ultrasound exams utilizing different scanning modalities as required by the patient's condition and/or examination requested;
    • Evaluates images for quality;
    • Works with physicians, nursing staff and schedulers to ensure patients are seen promptly;
    • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and procedure table before and after each procedure;
    • Assist with inventory control and purchasing of supplies for assigned area; and
    • Performs other related duties as required.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
    • Graduation from a single two-year allied health education program that is patient-care related; OR
    • Graduation from a program accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals (CAAHEP) that specifically conducts programmatic accreditation for diagnostic medical sonography/diagnostic cardiac sonography/vascular technology OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in sonography or vascular technology OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in any major and the equivalent of one (1) year of full-time clinical ultrasound/vascular experience. (NOTE: this experience cannot be used to satisfy the experience required below).

    AND
    Two (2) years of experience performing the duties in Ultrasound

    Necessary Special Requirements:

    • All specialty areas require CPR certification.
    • Ultrasonographer: American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) Certification

    DESIRED
    • Fetal Ultrasound experience
    • Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (ARDCS) Certification
    • Experience performing ultrasounds to support Maternal-Fetal Medicine, including complex diagnostic anatomical scans for fetal anomalies


    Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

    Comprehensive knowledge of:
    • Anatomy, physiology, physics, and medical terminology as it relates to each imaging modality
    • Complex diagnostic anatomical scans
    • Exam specific requirements when imaging neonates, pediatric, and adult patients
    • Adherence to HIPAA regulations
    • Documentation required for exam billing processes
    • General imaging patient care practices/operations utilized in a hospital setting

    Skill in:
    • Positioning patients for image acquisition
    • Shielding patients per ALARA
    • Recognizing and evaluating projected images for clarity, content, and scope of examination

    Demonstrated ability to:
    • Perform routing, complex, and specialty imaging services studies to include measurements of normal and abnormal pathology and detailed anatomical statistics
    • Proficiently perform exams requiring sterile field set-up and maintenance
    • Exercise a high degree of tact, courtesy, poise, sensitivity, and respect when explaining procedures to patients
    • Provide clear and concise explanations to patients to reduce anxieties and obtain cooperation
    • Establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and staff
    • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
