    Major Duties

    Under general supervision, the Detective Sergeant position's primary responsibility involves the coordination of various duties and responsibilities of the Investigation Unit. The incumbent acts as the lead case investigator for crimes and/or incidents involving, but not limited to, "major crimes" and "special/sensitive crimes."
    • Assigned as needed to act as an investigator for threat assessment cases, person(s) of concern, disabled and mental illness cases, workplace violence situations, and supporting Title IX investigations.
    • Provides investigative services for the department's threat assessment team, under the direction of the appropriate command staff member, including evaluating all reported incidents of workplace violence, domestic violence or fear of violence and assess the violence or danger potential.
    • Supervises all activities involving victims and witnesses of crimes to ensure they receive professional handling consistent with their important investigative and prosecutory roles prior to the arrest, upon arrest, and post-arrest processing of the suspect, to include but not be limited to personal protection plans, protection/restraining orders, emergency protective housing, and social service and medical related referrals.

    Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred.
    • Equivalent to three years of law enforcement experience, in a sworn capacity, which would provide reasonable expectation of success in this class. Six years of active law enforcement experience, in a sworn capacity, is preferred.
    • Two years of investigative experience preferred.
    • Must be free of any felony convictions; have good moral character; meet pre-employment requirements including physical exam, psychological exam, drug test, and pass a comprehensive POST background investigation.
    • Completion of a POST Supervisory Program is desirable or must be completed within one year of appointment.
    • Possess a valid POST Certificate of Eligibility or a POST Basic Certificate in good standing. California POST Intermediate certificate preferred.
    • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
    • Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.


    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
    • Thorough knowledge of law enforcement, emergency response, public safety, security methods, and criminal and special/sensitive investigations used in maintaining public safety.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of: current law enforcement methods and procedures; current criminal codes and laws including federal and state higher education law (i.e. Clery, VAWA, Title IX); and effective investigative techniques and procedures.
    • Ability to satisfactorily meet the current employment standards of the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and CSUN Minimum Standards of Employment and Training.
    • Ability and specialized skills to: work independently and make sound judgments; provide effective leadership, training, and direction to assigned personnel; supervise and evaluate employees effectively; and assist in developing department policies and procedures.
    • Relate to and gain the confidence and cooperation of members of the academic community.
    • Deal tactfully and effectively with a wide range of people and act calmly and rationally in emergency situations.
    • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.


    Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
    • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
    • Classification: Sergeant / 8354 / 0
    • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $9759 - $11449 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $7763 - $11449 per month.
    • HOURS: Full Time; Shift rotates and includes evenings and/or weekends.
    • REG: This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
    • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
