    Looking for an exciting and fun summer job that allows you to make a difference in the lives of children? City of Los Altos is currently seeking experienced and enthusiastic camp directors to join our team and help create an unforgettable summer camp experience for our young campers!

    EXCITING OPPORTUNITY !
    The City of Los Altos is looking for an energetic and creative Summer Camp Directors. This recruitment is hiring fun, passionate, positive, innovative and outdoor enthusiasts to join our dynamic Camp Jelly Bean and Redwood Grove Summer Camp team. Work under the redwoods and make a difference in the lives of our campers (ages 3.5 to 11 years) and Counselors in training (ages 12 to 15 years). Recreation Leaders also have the opportunity to work in other department areas as needed.

    The Camp Director reports to the Recreation Coordinator. The position is responsible for Redwood Grove Camp and Camp Jelly Bean by working with Recreation Leaders to plan, organize, and lead a variety of recreation activities. Typical activities are planned around a theme and include but are not limited to the following: staff training, environmental education, arts, crafts, sports, games, contests and special events for campers ages 3.5 to 11 years, maintaining communication with the public, promoting and ensuring safety procedures. Camp Director must be able to work with fellow recreation leaders to assist in the implementation of recreation activities and perform other related duties as required.

    LOCATION OF CAMPS: Shoup Park, Redwood Grove, and San Antonio Club

    PARKS & RECREATION OPEN HOUSE: March 1st, 2025 11:00am - 1:30pm - Apply in-person!

    STAFF TRAINING: Monday, June 9 - Friday, June 13, 2024; 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

    SUMMER CAMP DATES: June 16th - August 8th

    Examples of Duties

    Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
    • Direct, lead, and implement planned, theme-based activities which may include environmental education, arts, crafts, sports, games, contests, and special events for participants in a camp environment.
    • Mange and organize documents containing confidential and medical information.
    • Assist Recreation Coordinator with the coordination and implementation of recreation programs and activities.
    • Assist with the preparation and operation of assigned program areas including ordering supplies.
    • Prepare, open, and close recreation facilities by arranging furniture and equipment and ensure set up is correct.
    • Maintain an accurate schedule and record of work performed.
    • Review and analyze program effectiveness to make recommendations to the Recreation Coordinator.
    • Establish and maintain effective relationships with participants, parents, and community members.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and work cooperatively with other city staff, while maintaining the city's high standards.
    • Report problems or hazards which may occur in the environment/landscape, with children, parents, or equipment to on-site supervisor or Recreation Coordinator.
    • Train Recreation Leaders to engage children in age-appropriate activities and motivate participants.
    • Lead and provide direction to Recreation Leaders.
    • Follow safety procedures.
    • Independently initiate and complete work activities.
    • Prioritize, plan, and direct a variety of activities.
    • Lead and advise the work of other city staff and volunteers.
    • Work independently supervising city staff, participants, and volunteers.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

    EXPERIENCE:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • One year of paid experience in supervising staff or leading a team. Alternatively, one season of experience equivalent to the City’s classification of Recreation Leader may substitute for one year of paid experience.
    • Leadership in activity, project planning/implementation preferred.


    EDUCATION:
    • Possession of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required.
    • Coursework in Recreation, Child Development, Administration, Environmental Education or related field preferred.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
    • Ability to use and train others on computer equipment for documents, templates and control systems.
    • Ability to climb, balance, walk and stand for long periods of time.
    • Ability to observe and take direction and lead.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, outside contacts, and all levels of employees. Ability to review, comprehend, and respond to all necessary documentation.
    • Ability to work and adapt to outdoor weather conditions.
    • Ability to follow illness protocols and regulations.
