    The Conveyance and Distribution Group of the Metropolitan Water District currently has two (2) openings for a Hydroelectric Specialist II (Pumping Plant) within the Desert Support Services Unit at our Gene Pumping Plant in Parker Dam, CA.

    In this position you will use your advanced high-voltage skills and will be responsible for conducting the testing and evaluations for the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) regulatory requirements of the high-voltage equipment throughout the Desert area. This position utilizes specialized skills, experience and knowledge in the practices, procedures, and methods of monitoring protective and control equipment condition and performance, including predictive and advanced diagnostic (non-destructive) testing; preventive and corrective maintenance; improving capacity and upgrading systems such as pumps, turbines, generators, transformers, motors, high-voltage overhead and underground electrical distribution systems; maintaining and providing technical assistance for establishing operating parameters of complex generation and power systems, including all related water and hydroelectric control systems and the Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

    The primary responsibility for this position is to perform onsite electrical diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs for Desert pumping plant electrical equipment, including advanced level experience in Substation maintenance and testing and Protection Relay calibration and testing. This includes working on high-voltage equipment over 600 volts, troubleshooting, repairs and testing of motors, circuit breakers, relays, transformers, power cables, CT’s and PT’s and other associated high, medium, and low voltage electrical systems.

    This position is located at our Gene Camp facility, which makes it eligible for a 5% premium pay on top of the hourly rate.

    Schedule: 4/10, 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday through Thursday alternating every other week to Tuesday through Friday.

    Expectations of Hours of Service, Emergency and Stand-by Service:
    Employees in this position may be required to work off-shift hours and/or stand-by services to address operational needs and emergencies as required. May be required to work extended periods away from the normal reporting location.

    This position is located at the Gene Pumping Plant in Parker Dam, California, which is near Lake Havasu City and Parker, Arizona.

    EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education and Experience: High school diploma or High School Equivalency Certificate in addition to a minimum of 5 years' experience in a journey level electrical or mechanical position of which two years is a combination of electrical, mechanical or electronic skills.

    Experience and knowledge beyond journey level as demonstrated by practical application of techniques and practices specific to the operations, maintenance, and repair of hydroelectric plants, pump plants, treatment plants and other facilities. Skills necessary include predictive and diagnostic evaluation of complex utility pump and power equipment using analog and digital test equipment. Also requires advanced skills in installation and commissioning, utilizing predictive, preventive and corrective maintenance practices related to industrial/utility maintenance generally obtained through applicable training and experience.

    CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
    Employees in this position will be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:
    • Valid Driver’s license from state of residency equivalent to a California Class A, B, and/or C with appropriate commercial license endorsements (Required at time of application.)
    • MWD High Voltage Switching Certification (Required within 12 months)
