    The Position

    Corrections Counselors within in the Nevada Department of Corrections provide mental health services to offenders in a correctional setting including interviews, behavioral planning and implementation, consultation, psycho-educational classes, research, and training.

    Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

    The Correction Counselor II, formerly Mental Health Counselor II provides Mental Health services to offenders in a correctional facility. This position involves the provision of mental health services to offenders as defined by Medical Directives and Administrative Regulations such as AR 643, 645 801, and MD 318, 319, 110, as well as SB 307. These services include individual contacts, crises response for both outpatient offenders and offenders in restrictive housing. Through NOTIS, CC II document contacts including SOAPE progress notes for offenders followed by mental health both on medication and not prescribed medication and complete suicide risk assessments. For restrictive housing offenders this documentation includes Initial Segregation Reviews and either 30- or 90-day Mental Status Exams as well as SOAPE progress notes. Additionally, CC IIs complete numerous reports and referrals including Parole Board reports, Community referrals, psychiatric referrals, sex offender risk assessments, and participate in CQI monitoring. CC II also provide psychoeducational groups to outpatient offenders and monitor in-cell study for offenders in restrictive housing. ***THIS RECRUITMENT MAY CLOSE WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE DEPENDING ON THE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS RECEIVED.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Master's degree from an accredited college or university in clinical psychology, psychology, counseling, education, social work, or closely related field and two years of post-Master's degree experience providing therapy, psychological testing and programmatic services in a correctional, rehabilitative, clinic or institutional setting; OR a Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational psychology, social work, or closely related field which included a one-year internship in an applied program in a correctional, law enforcement, rehabilitative, clinic or institutional setting; OR a Doctoral degree (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology from an accredited school of professional psychology, and a one-year internship in an applied program as described above; OR two years of experience as a Corrections Counselor I in Nevada State service. Special Notes As part of the hiring process, applicants for positions in the Nevada System of Higher Education may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for fingerprinting. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. It is essential that applications include detailed information with time frames regarding education and experience. The most qualified applicants will be contacted by the hiring agency for interview. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
