GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Responsible for compliance archeology on new properties for the State Parks system. Will work as a team member for projects on existing parks.
Under the general direction of the Archeological Services Team Lead the Archeological Project Manager performs advanced (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work. This position is responsible for coordinating all cultural resources survey and management activities on parcels of land that may be acquired to become new state parks. Functions as a member of planning teams for new parks. Will make visits to candidate land parcels. Provides technical assistance and support to land acquisition and planning staff and performs archeological fieldwork. Responsible for developing scopes of work, budgets, and performs oversight of contracted archeological work to be conducted by cultural resources management firms. Develops cultural resource management plans for new state parks so that they may be managed properly when opened to the public. Manages project budgets. Works closely with the State Parks Historian and other members of the Preservation Services Team. Reviews construction planning documents for the creation of new state park facilities and potential for impact to archeological sites. This position has stop-work authority over all construction activities that may affect integrity if construction encounters unexpected archeological resources. All activities which involve ground disturbance including construction, road building, vegetation clearing (except hand clearing) will be reviewed and assessed by the Archeological Project Manager. When not working on land acquisition projects the candidate will serve as a project archeologist or crew member on projects conducted by the Archeological Services Team on projects across the state parks system. Provides other archeological tasks for the Archeological Services Team as directed. Provides technical assistance to the Cultural Resources Program Director regarding potential land acquisitions. This position is responsible for ensuring agency compliance with state and federal antiquities laws, including the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) Code, the Antiquities Code of Texas, and the National Historic Preservation Act. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.
Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Anthropology, Archeology, Applied History, Historic Preservation, or related field.
Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in (1) archeological fieldwork, (2) archeological project scoping and management, (3) cultural resources management (4) writing professional reports on archeological or cultural resources issues.
NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.
Licensure: Applicant must possess a valid State driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of prehistoric and historic archeology, gained through academic training;
Knowledge of prehistoric and historic material culture;
Knowledge of artifact identification and analysis techniques;
Knowledge of Texas prehistoric and historic archeology;

Knowledge of natural resources protection and stewardship practices;

Ability to manage and coordinate different acquisition program activities related to cultural resources management and accomplish goals using independent judgment and initiative;
Ability to administer contracts;
Ability to work with individuals with different types of training and backgrounds to create solutions and bring projects to completion;
Ability to work under limited supervision, exercise initiative, and accomplish several tasks simultaneously;
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally, using technical writing skills, and distilling archeological information into plain language for the general public or other parks-related disciplines;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
WORKING CONDITIONS Required to work overtime as necessary;
Occasionally will require work hours other than 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday;
Required to travel up to 50%, with some overnight stays;
Outdoor work in all seasons and weather conditions;
After a six month probationary period the candidate will be allowed to apply for telework two days a week;
