    Job Summary:

    Ensures well-maintained, high quality, safe and aesthetically pleasing, sports field facilities and grounds. Operates and maintains Sports Field related maintenance equipment, cleans and prepares facilities and hardscape areas. Leads part time staff to accomplish identified work goals and assists in the completion of other tasks. Flexibility a must and work various hours including nights, weekends and holidays required.

    The salary range for this position is $20.70- $27.95 per hour with a hiring range of $20.70 - $24.33, depending on qualifications and experience.

    Position will remain open until filled.

    This position will primarily focus on all aspects of natural and artificial turf management, and irrigation system management / repair for the Sports Turf section. Incumbent will be responsible for scheduling of irrigation systems as well as performing necessary repairs at multiple sites. This is a year round regular 40 hour per week position, with all the benefits of full time. Hours are generally 7am - 4pm M-Th, 7am - 11am on Friday. Shifts include weekend and evening hours and sometimes with short notice.

    Essential Functions:
    • Ensures safe, clean and well-maintained sports fields, restrooms, shelters, playgrounds, and play-courts.
    • Conduct inspections, sports field layouts, ball field preparations, custodial services, maintenance procedures and repairs.
    • Ensure safety and reliable irrigation system operation. Implement and maintain a complete irrigation maintenance program.
    • Ensures efficient water usage. Adjust watering times according to the needs of turf, shrubs, and trees.
    • Completes assigned work tasks and projects through the safe and proper operation of a variety of tools and equipment.
    • Ensures the most efficient and effective use of time and resources. Plan and schedule work for self & others.
    • Work as an effective part of the team. Respond to change and special needs with flexibility and in a positive manner. Take initiative to professionally resolve conflicts with others.
    • Maintains dialogue and relationships with the public, special interest groups and City staff on a constructive level by employing effective interpersonal skills

    Other Job Functions:
    • Aids and assists with other sections of the Parks Division.
    • Supervises part-time maintenance staff with positive coaching and leadership.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Job Level and Management Expectations:

    Qualifications:

    Education:
    • High School graduate or GED required.
    • Some training in park, irrigation and turf maintenance or a closely related field preferred.

    Experience:
    • 2 years previous experience closely related to the position's essential job duties required.
    • Experience in general park facility and ball field maintenance, sports field layout and maintenance, equipment operation (i.e. tractor-loader-backhoe, etc.), fertilizer/pesticide application, and programming computerized irrigation controllers preferred.

    Certifications:
    • Must possess a valid driver's license.
    • Current CPR and First Aid Certification, or ability to obtain within three (6) months of hire.
    • Per department needs, this position may be required to obtain the following:
      • Confined Space Entry certification within 1 year of hire.
      • State of Colorado commercial pesticide applicator’s license within six months of employment.
      • State of Colorado Backflow Tester certification within one year of employment.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Must follow verbal and written instructions and communicate effectively verbally and in writing with a variety of people directly and/or via mobile phone, computer and two-way radio.
    • Perform strenuous physical work, including but not limited to, sports field maintenance & layout in all weather conditions.
    • Basic landscape plant identification skills and ability to diagnose turf disease problems preferred.
    • Safely operate a variety of equipment (i.e. a truck and trailer, tractor, dump truck, tractor-loader-backhoe, etc.) in an urban setting using proper traffic control devices and personal protective equipment.
    • Communicate effectively and diplomatically with co-workers, special interest groups and the general public.
    • Traverse grounds and parks with various topographical conditions to visually identify needed work and perform maintenance work.

    Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
    • Frequent strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
    • Frequent exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.
    • Occasional e xposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury.
