    Minimum Qualifications
    Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
    • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus seven (7) years of relevant work experience related to electric utility distribution construction/design, including two (2) years of experience performing as an electric utility distribution power designer and one (1) year of experience functioning in a people/project lead capacity.
    • Education from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for experience up to four (4) years for the minimum qualifications.

    This position will lead a distribution design team whose function is to design medium-voltage electric distribution and lighting. In addition to leading a team, this position may function in a designer capacity as required. Design at Austin Energy consists of all aspects required to provide power and lighting to customers, including customer interaction, drafting, sizing of electrical equipment, framing, material acquisition, cost estimates, obtaining permits, and any field work required to effectively identify existing conditions and to stake designs for installation.

    Critical:
    This position has been designated as a Critical Employee position. Critical Employees are considered necessary and vital and supports activities that impact City or department operations. This work can be done while at a designated work site or while working at an alternate work location. Critical employees who are able to work at an alternative work location are required to do so. Schedules may be modified, and employees may be reassigned to another area during extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to provide essential services.

    Travel:
    If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

    Fair Labor Standards Act:

    This position is classified FLSA Exempt. Exempt employees are salaried and are not eligible for overtime compensation.
    Pay Range
    $42.26 - $54.94

    Hours
    Monday-Friday: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    Hybrid: 2-days in-office, 3-days remote
    Hours in addition to the standard 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week may be required.

    Preferred Experience:
    1. Experience designing medium-voltage electric distribution facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial developments, including customer interaction, drafting, sizing of electrical equipment, framing, material acquisition, cost estimates and obtaining permits.

    2. Recent experience working with AutoCAD.

    3. Proficient using software packages such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.

    4. Knowledge of medium-voltage electrical distribution equipment of 35kV and below.

    5. Project management experience, leading projects from planning to completion with little to no guidance.

    6. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with people of various professions, cultures, and skill levels.

    7. Experience in customer service focusing on problem solving and resolutions with a diverse set of key stakeholders, such as developers, engineers, technical personnel, neighborhood groups and other city departments.

    8. Leadership experience assigning work, administering training, and overseeing people.

    Other:
    Ability to travel to multiple work sites required.
    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

    Plans, assigns, schedules, organizes, and monitors the work assigned to a distribution design work group. Communicates and monitors the work done by others in distribution design for compliance with the quality management system. Provides mentoring, training, and guidance to others in distribution design. Assess load requirements, evaluates environmental constraints and identifies project requirements (permits, easements, aesthetics, fees, etc.) Performs cost estimates, plans material needs, and follows up on progress of distribution projects from inception to completion. Performs power system calculations: voltage drop, equipment sizing, etc. Interprets survey data, plan, and deed information. Interprets engineered construction drawings. Interfaces regularly with contractors, engineers, developers, customers, etc. Develops master system plans for future growth in large developments. Makes presentations to City Council and neighborhood groups. Oversees work group budgets. Works on special projects as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and the National Electric Safety Code requirements relevant to distribution design issues/distribution design techniques.
    • Knowledge of high school-level math (algebra, geometry, and trigonometry), physics, etc. relevant to electric utility distribution design.
    • Knowledge of distribution design and construction practices, including Austin Energy (AE) Distribution Designer Guidelines and Distribution Construction Standards.
    • Knowledge of utility service guidelines and policies.
    • Knowledge of power system components, functions, ratings, and limitations.
    • Knowledge of roadway, security, and other lighting design practices.
    • Knowledge of training and monitoring of assigned work group.
    • Ability to apply AE Design Criteria to various customer situations.
    • Ability to use AutoCAD or equivalent computer-assisted tools.
    • Ability to use word processing and spreadsheet applications.
    • Ability to perform advanced power system calculations.
    • Ability to analyze power distribution systems and components.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.

    City Government
