    The Position

    Positions in this series manage, supervise and participate in wildland fire suppression; fire prevention and education; presuppression; equipment and facility maintenance; and forestry and fire law enforcement. Assist the Forestry Program Manager - Fire to ensure that the components of the divisions Wildland Fire Protection Program are managed and operated in an efficient, accurate and safe manner consistent with federal, State, and division regulations, policies and procedures.

    Incumbents function as first-line supervisors who train, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned staff; assign and review work; and initiate disciplinary action. This position is located in Carlin, Nevada. The Fire Captain works with staff to ensure agency and national training qualifications, and currency are met. This position evaluates situations and requests necessary resources; inspects, tests, and ensures proper operation of all assigned equipment; and maintains records and prepares reports.

    The Fire Captain works closely with state, federal, and local cooperators, as well as landowners to achieve the mission. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicants must be qualified as a NWCG Firefighter 1 (FFT1 or higher), and NWCG Single Resource Boss at time of application and must maintain these qualifications for the duration of employment. Incumbents will need to become an NWCG Incident Commander Type IV trainee and Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type III trainee upon hire and become fully qualified within 3 years; as well as, able to obtain their CDL class B within one year of appointment and complete the NDF Natural Resource Task Book within 3 years. To verify these eligibility requirements for the position, a copy of your Red Card, or equivalent, MUST be attached to application at time of submittal. Applicants must pass a work capacity test at an arduous level prior to appointment and for continued employment. The test consists of a three (3) mile walk, carrying a forty-five (45) pound pack, in less than forty-five (45) minutes.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Associate's degree in fire science or closely related field and three years of firefighting experience; OR Graduation from high school or equivalent education and four years of firefighting experience; OR one year as a Firefighter II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes Some positions in this series are required to obtain and maintain a Nevada commercial driver's license with endorsements as specified by the agency. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, all positions in this class have been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this class must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances. Applicants may be required to pass a thorough medical examination and physical agility test prior to appointment and for continuing employment. Positions in this series are required to work varied shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. Incumbents must obtain additional certifications, as identified by the agency, within specific timeframes identified by the agency, and must maintain those certifications as a condition of continuing employment. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
